Lando Norris has agreed with his radio comment branding himself a "fucking idiot" following his Saudi Arabian Grand Prix qualifying accident. Championship leader Norris will start 10th on the grid in Jeddah following a huge accident in Q3, where he hit the wall at Turn 5 after losing control of the car over the Turn 4 exit kerb. It destroyed the left-front of the MCL39, with Norris's immediate title rivals Max Verstappen and team-mate Oscar Piastri sharing the front-row. Verstappen is just eight points behind Norris, with Piastri three behind the Briton, who labelled himself as "clueless" following a fumble in qualifying last time out in Bahrain, when he was sixth. In the aftermath of the accident, Norris branded himself as a "fucking idiot" over the radio, a tag he reiterated when questioned about it. "Yeah, makes sense, I agree with it," Norris told media, including RacingNews365 , when presented with the comment after the crash. "I should be fighting for pole, and I shouldn't be taking risks like I seem to have done. "It is not a guarantee that we would have been on pole, because Max did a good job, they were quick, and it wasn't a surprise, so it would have been nice to be in that fight. "I was doing well and was feeling comfortable, and I'm not going to be proud, not going to be happy. I've let myself down and the team down, and the guys have a big job to fix it all. "I don't know what happened. I've not had time to look into it, but it was just a mistake. I was pretty comfortable and was pretty happy, so the car was strong. "Obviously, I've made my life and everyone in the team's a lot trickier for tomorrow, but it is life. "This happens on a rare occasion, so it is a tough one, but I will look on the bright side and hope we can have a good race. "It is not easy to overtake around here, but we have a strong car, clearly not as good as we would like because we are not on pole, it is it not like things are plain-sailing at the minute." 1913654850845364667 This is the moment that cost Lando Norris a chance at pole position tonight 😮🔽 #F1 #SaudiArabianGP pic.twitter.com/QvzYSUYrha — Formula 1 (@F1) April 19, 2025
