• HUSQVARNA’S BLACK ARROW AND WHITE ARROW PROTOTYPES

The Husqvarna Vitpilen (White Arrow in Swedish) is inspired by the 1953 Silverpilen road bike. The frame and engine come straight a KTM Duke 390, but has redesigned cosmetics to make it retro cool —ala cafe racer style.

To Americans Husqvarna is synonomous with off-road racing, thanks to J.N. Roberts, Steve McQueen and Malcolm Smith, who popularize the Swedish dirt bikes by riding the fast on red-tanked dirt bikes in “On Any Sunday.”

But Husqvarna wanted to change that image at the 2014 Milan motorcycle show in Milan, when they unveiled two new street bike conceptsHusky hope would open up new markets for the company. Few Americans realize that Husqvarna was well-known for its single cylinder street nike in the late 1930s and 1940 1940s. The unveiled concepts were the VitpIlen (white Arrow in English) and the Svartpilen (Black Arrow in English).

The 401 Svartpilen (Black Arrow) is another 390 clone, but this time as a retro-looking scrambler. These are not production bikes, but rather design concepts. The did see production in 2018.

The engine was a 373cc single of KTM design. It puts out a reported 43 horsepower in street trim.

On the White Arrow the exhaust exits down through the swingarm and then back up on the right side of the bike.

Here is the shock and exhaust interface.

Note the front and rear fork guards, the cross-hatch swingarm, LED headlight ring and minimal instruments.

The Vitpilen is very streamlined with minimal bodywork as part of Husqvarna’s Husqvarna says a “less is more” design philosophy, Even the LED headlight does double-duty such as a handlebar mounts. The engines on both model is the liquid-cooled, 401cc, four-stroke single.

The White Arrow and Black Arrow didn’t go into dealerships in 2018, but were phased out starting in 2023 and superceded by the Svartpilen 801, a more conventional naked street bike powered by a 799cc parallel twin engine that was deemed to be more desirable for America’s freeways, super highways and fast traffic than the discontinued 401 versions. Plus, the modernistic look of the 2014 prototypes was dropped.

• MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: 2024-’25 KAWASAKI KX450/KX250 LINKAGE SYSTEM

The Pro Circuit Linkage System for the 2024-2025 Kawasaki KX450 and 2025 KX250 enhances handling by improving suspension performance. Unlike the stock linkage, which begins stiff and softens deeper into the stroke, this system offers a plusher initial feel while progressively firming up, thus reducing the need for stiffer high-speed valving. Designed similarly to the 2019-2023 KX450 linkage, it optimizes spring rates for enhanced balance, improved traction, and a smoother ride.

The Pro Circuit KX450 linkage system is plusher at the beginning and stiffens up as the rear wheel goes deeper into the stroke. This adjustment lessens the need for stiffer high-speed valving, which can cause the rear to feel harsh and deflective. This linkage curve is similar in design to the previous generation of KX450 (’19-23).A 0.1 kg/mm shock spring rate increase is recommended. The retail price is $465.00 at www.procircuit.com
