Triple crown races are tricky. They reward, both speed and consistency and pay a premium on getting good starts. Seth Hammaker won two of the three motos in the 250 East, but a first moto crash sent him back to last place. Seth came back up to 9th place and won the next two motos, but ended the night in fourth place instead of first. R.J. Hampshire won the first moto and got second in the second moto, but he struggled in moto three to get a fifth place, which was still good enough for second overall, but he lost the overall win on a tie-breaker to Nate Thrasher’s win the the third moto. Poor Max Anstie. He led the 250 East for the first four rounds, but crashed in practice and broke his fibula and ended his season early.

In the 450 class, Jason Anderson went down in every moto, sometimes by himself and sometimes with help from another competitor. He ended up in 7th for the night with a 5-8-12 score and dropped from 6th in the 450 points chase to 7th. He wasn’t the only one to drop in points at the Birmingham Triple Crown: Ken Roczen dropped from 3rd place in 450 points to 5th place; Justin Cooper dropped from 4th to 6th and Justin Barcia dropped from 7th to 9th. And even though Cooper Webb won a moto on Saturday night, his 7th in the first moto resulted in his 15-point lead over Chase Sexton in the 450 Supercross Championship shrinking to 8 points after Birmingham.
