NASCAR team owner talks OEMs and the NASCAR lawsuit

Charters function as franchise ownership for NASCAR teams. The owner of a charter is guaranteed a start spot in every race and they receive a larger portion of race and championship payouts than non-charter teams.

At the end of the 2024 season, NASCAR presented teams with a new charter agreement that extends through the 2031 season. 13 of the 15 teams signed the agreement.

NASCAR lawsuit opened by 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports

23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports elected not to sign the agreement. Instead, they opened an antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR.

Brad Keselowski, co-owner of RFK Racing sees this lawsuit as well as the future of OEMs as the biggest threats to NASCAR.

Recently, a judge ruled on injunction that 23XI and Front Row will operate as charter teams for the 2025 season. This is while the lawsuit is ongoing. Depending on how the trial goes, this could still be reversed in the future.

Brad Keselowski talks about the biggest threats to NASCAR

“The car guys, the next decade is going to be tough for them,” Brad Keselowski stated via Dirty Mo Media.

“We continue to see regulations push electric vehicles. As we’re seeing companies like Tesla takeoff. We’re seeing the Asian auto market, really takeoff and take market share from the current NASCAR OEMs.”

“The OEMs are under massive pressure and their under attack. Eventually, that’s going to work it’s way into NASCAR.”

“Outside of whatever happens with this charter lawsuit, I see that as being the biggest threat to NASCAR. Because, it’s not in our control.”

“We’re going to have to get to a spot where we’re more and more OEM agnostic. I don’t like that. But, if we’re looking 10 years into the future, it’s a big threat.”

Moving the OEM spend from technical to marketing

“I would like to see the OEMs be less technical in the sport in the nature of their support. And significantly more marketing and branding involved,” Keselowski added.

“The OEMs are spending more now in NASCAR than they ever have. And it’s not even close.”

“For NASCAR, it’s important to move the OEM spend out of the technical realm and into the marketing realm of our sport.”

“And do that evenly. If you just do it for one OEM and not the other OEMs, they’ll get crushed.”
