For the first time, JR Motorsports had a NASCAR Cup Series car touch the track

Dale Earnhardt Jr has long expressed an interest in JR Motorsports fielding a car in the NASCAR Cup Series. Just hours ago, that became a reality as the No. 40 car he co-owns rolled onto Daytona International Speedway.

JR Motorsports is making their NASCAR Cup Series debut in 2025

The team was founded in 2005 and runs multiple full-time cars in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. For years, Dale Jr has stated the team has been interested in acquiring a charter to climb the ladder.

However, the price of said charters have shocked him and suppressed his efforts of fielding a car. Recent estimates suggest a price around $40M.

So, they’re doing it part-time instead. The team still doesn’t own a charter but they’re going Cup racing.

After years of waiting, Dale Earnhardt Jr isn’t missing a moment. The NCS garage opened at 6am this morning and the team co-owner was standing there to see his car roll off the hauler and into the garage area.

Justin Allgaier is piloting the machine in the Daytona 500. He turned his first laps in practice earlier today.

Dale Earnhardt Jr comments as his car touches the track for the first time

“It’s a dream of mine to be in the Cup garage as an owner,” Dale Earnhardt Jr told Fox Sports.

“It’s pretty special to finally have that opportunity. Especially at the biggest race of the year.”

“A lot of preparation in the car. But, it’s time to get to work. I’m glad we got some practice. Certainly with a new car, you’ve got bugs and things to try to work out.”

Qualifying for the Daytona 500 is scheduled for tonight.
