Front Row Motorsports issues statement on the charter purchase from Stewart-Haas Racing

Front Row Motorsports and 23XI Racing are jointly suing NASCAR under antitrust claims.

Charters are NASCAR’s version of franchises. Only 36 charters exist and they guarantee a starting position in every race. Charter teams also earn significantly more of the payouts over open teams (even for finishing in the same position).

NASCAR lawsuit opened by 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports

FRM and 23XI Racing elected not to sign the charter agreement for 2025 as they then opened the lawsuit. Each team held two charters each in the 2024 season.

NASCAR stated they intended to race the 2025 season with just 32 charters after the teams elected to not to sign the agreement.

Teams requested the court allow them to race as charter teams in 2025 and approve a purchase of a third charter

At the same time, both 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports attempted to purchase a third charter ahead of the 2025 season.

Any purchase of a charter must be approved by NASCAR. And, part of the charter agreement notes that charter teams aren’t allowed to sue with an antitrust case.

With the lawsuit ongoing, the teams requested that the court force NASCAR to allow each team to run as a charter team for 2025 regarding their previous two charters. They also asked the court to approve the third charter purchase.

The judge has approved an injunction requested by the teams. That allows FRM to finalize their purchase of the charter from Stewart-Haas Racing.

NASCAR does plan to appeal the injunction approval.

However, today, FRM has announced they have completed the purchase of the charter.
