Kyle Busch comments on the new era of NASCAR drivers

When Kyle Busch first joined the NASCAR Cup Series in 2003, it was different sport. Drivers raced for a season-long championship and crashing drastically hindered those efforts.

Now, winning is far more important than avoiding DNFs. Thus, we now have drivers crashing other drivers and risking it all for the win.

Last year, Austin Dillon crashed Joey Logano on the final lap at Richmond Raceway. Dillon was officially credited with the win. However, NASCAR didn’t allow that win to count toward playoff eligibility.

The incident at Richmond last year is far from isolated.

On Saturday, Sammy Smith crashed Taylor Gray on the final lap. In this recent case, both drivers were impacted, handing the win to Austin Hill.

Kyle Busch comments on the era

“I think it was Vegas, I made him mad at Vegas,” Kyle Busch told Kevin Harvick while speaking of Tony Stewart.

“It was in the last 25 laps of the race but I cut him off a couple times. He tried to get back at me and he missed.”

“He ended up fencing himself off turn two. I think I finished 3rd, he finished like 15th. Because he killed his car, steel body cars.”

“He was not too thrilled with me. He was mad at me for like another 2 months. Finally, we had a run-in with one another, again.”

“Eddie called me over to his bus, ‘Hey Tony wants to talk to you.’ So, you’re on pins and needles. So, we went in the bus.”

“He’s like, ‘Look man, you’re young. You’re fast, you can do this, you’re going to be a winner, multi-time champion one day. You’ve got it, you’re going to be fine. You just gotta figure out how to reign it all in and be under control.’ “

“Do the things, like how that era of racing was done. That was the Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick era.”

“That was a different era than what we’re into today. People ask me, ‘Why don’t you take these kids under your wing and teach them and tell them.’ “

“I’m like, ‘We are in a completely different era now. There is no fixing what we’ve got going on right now with everybody running over everybody.’ “

“They would much rather crash than win a race. I don’t get it.”
