NASCAR issued a steep penalty to Austin Dillon and Richard Childress Racing after crashing Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin at Richmond Raceway

Last season, Joey Logano was leading on the final lap at Richmond Raceway. It was one of four races remaining in the regular season.

In a win and your in playoff format, winning means everything. In the final corner, Austin Dillon drove it deep into the corner and used the rear bumper of Joey Logano as his brake pedal.

As Logano spun in front of the field, Hamlin worked under Dillon. That when Dillon turned left, hooking Hamlin in the right rear.

Austin Dillon crashed them both. And he crossed the finish line first.

Logano was heated. He pulled down the pit lane, creating his own lane as he drove right to the No. 3 team. A crowd of people stood in the pit lane as they were likely soon to walk to the infield. Logano made them jump out of the way and he was immediately scolded by a NASCAR official.

After the race, team audio surfaced. The team told Dillon over the radio, "Down, down, down. Wreck him! C'mon, c'mon. F*** yeah!"

NASCAR issued a big penalty to Austin Dillon and Joey Logano

NASCAR stated immediately that they would review the finish. Days later, Richard Childress Racing was issued a steep penalty.

The No. 3 team was docked 25 owner points and 25 driver points. Additionally, the win would count in the record books but he could not use it to grab a ticket to the playoffs.

Dillon missed the playoffs. Points are where the money is as teams are paid a grand sum at the end of the season based on their results in the standings.

Had Dillon made it to the playoffs he would have locked himself in to 16th at minimum. Instead, he finished 32nd in the overall driver standings.

Joey Logano was also handed a $50,000 fine for the actions on the pit lane.

Richard Childress comments on the incident between Austin Dillon and Joey Logano

“That deal in Richmond cost us over $3 million dollars,” Richard Childress told Dale Earnhardt Jr.

“It’s not always about the money. It’s real money.”

“Of all the things that’s ever happened in our career, the Richmond race, I’ll never get over that one. Cause I’ve seen it happen so many times.”

“And, the same two guys that was involved in it are the two biggest culprits. But, it comes down to who had the most power that could get in NASCAR’s ear.”
