Shane van Gisbergen races full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series for Trackhouse Racing.

During the off-season, the driver returned to his home country of New Zealand. However, he’s elected to skip the off-season part as he’s racing a dirt sprint car.

Watch the dirt sprint car crash video below.

Over the weekend, the driver raced at Baypark Speedway in Tauranga, New Zealand. And he went end over in a wild crash.

Just at the end of the straightaway, van Gisbergen filled a hole on the outside of another car. And just before the corner, that hole closed.

The two drivers banged wheels, left front to right rear. Shane van Gisbergen was immediately sent skyward.

After flipping over several times, the car came to a rest on it’s side. The 35-year-old was ok after the crash and it turns out it was his first ever rollover.

Shane van Gisbergen comments after the dirt car crash

The driver stated via X, “Well that was my first ever flip!”

“Unfortunately got collected by someone and took a bit of a ride. Thanks to the safety crew for doing an amazing job. The United Truck Parts team are having at rebuilding the car and we should be racing tonight at Baypark again

The next day, van Gisbergen was back in the seat.

“Decent night at Baypark! Finishing touches being put on our new car all afternoon and we managed to win the first heat race. What an awesome feeling after the last couple of days building up a new car! Thanks to everyone who helped get us back out there”

NASCAR drivers and dirt car injuries

It’s not uncommon to see NASCAR drivers racing on the dirt. It’s also not uncommon to see them upside down.

In 2023, Alex Bowman flipped in a dirt sprint car. He landed with a fractured vertebra.

After the crash, Hendrick Motorsports, the NASCAR team that Bowman drives for suggested that he didn’t race on dirt anymore.

Joe Gibbs Racing had a rule with their team drivers. They were not allowed to race on dirt. Thus, Christopher Bell has been absent from the Chili Bowl Nationals in recent events.

New for 2025, JGR has lifted their ban on dirt racing. It opens the door for Bell, Chase Briscoe and even Ty Gibbs to return to the dirt tracks.
