China launches probe against Canada's EV tariffs

China launched an anti-discriminatory probe against Canada's tariffs on imported Chinese electric vehicle (EV), steel, and aluminum products. 

The Chinese Commerce Ministry announced the start of its investigations against Canada's tariffs on Thursday, September 26, 2024. It stated that the probe could last up to three months but could be extended under special circumstances. China's Commerce Ministry also announced a probe into Canada's canola imports earlier this month. 

China explained that it is firmly against Canada's "discriminatory unilateral restrictive measures." It has requested to talk with Canada at the World Trade Organization about the tariffs. 

In August, Canada announced heavy tariffs on China-made electric vehicles and battery materials. The North American nation plans to impose 100% tariffs on EVs imported from China. It is also targeting steel and aluminum exports from China. 

"Geopolitics and geoeconomics is back. That means that Western countries— and very much the US — is putting a premium on secure supply chains and is taking a different attitude towards Chinese overcapacity. And that means that Canada plays an even more important role for the United States," said Canada's Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.
