Kimi's comeback: Mercedes rookie snags P4 after penalty drama

Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli marked his Formula 1 debut with a remarkable fourth-place finish at the 2025 Australian Grand Prix, showcasing resilience and skill despite an eventful weekend filled with challenges.
Initially stripped of his result due to a five-second penalty for an unsafe release by his team, Antonelli's position was restored following a successful appeal by Mercedes.
The 18-year-old Italian navigated a treacherous wet track, a mid-race spin, and a rollercoaster of emotions to etch his name into the sport's spotlight – a debut that was equal parts harrowing and heroic.
A Brutal Baptism in the Rain
Antonelli's weekend began with a stumble. A qualifying misadventure at Albert Park's Turn 6, hitting the kerb at an awkward angle amid gravel kicked up by others and cracking his W16's floor, relegating him to 16th on the grid.
Sunday's drenched circuit only steepened the challenge. With just one prior wet outing in a 2021 Mercedes cut short by snow, this was his first real test in a ground-effect car on modern intermediates.
"It was super difficult at the start," said Antonelli. "And behind the safety car the tyres were cooling down massively. The grip was nowhere.
"And also with all those white lines, it's super, super tricky because, as soon as you go over them, even in high-speed corners, you lose the grip all of a sudden."
An early Safety Car, sparked by Jack Doohan's spin, chilled the tyres further, and Antonelli's nerves frayed when he spun after overtaking Nico Hulkenberg for 12th on lap 15.
"I was lucky to spin in a place where it was safe," he admitted. "After I had the mistake, it kind of hurt my confidence a little bit.
"The team did great to calm me down and get me back into the rhythm, and made all the right calls."
That lifeline from the pit wall steadied him, setting the stage for a stunning recovery.
Climbing Through the Carnage
The race was a war of attrition, with F1 veteran Fernando Alonso smashing into the barriers, and other seasoned drivers botching their strategies.
Antonelli seized the moment, threading his way through the chaos. As conditions flipped between wet and dry, he surged forward, culminating in a gutsy pass on Alex Albon during the final six-lap sprint after the last Safety Car.
Fourth place beckoned – until a pit-lane twist nearly stole it away. With victory in sight, a five-second penalty loomed for an alleged unsafe release into Hulkenberg's path.
Mercedes kept Antonelli in the dark, urging him to push.
"You can only shake your head," commented Mercedes boss Toto Wolff. "It came up [on the screen] as an incident, nobody saw it – it wasn't played [on the TV feed] – and then 90 seconds later there was a penalty."
The penalty dropped him to fifth, but the team's fight wasn't over.
Victory Reclaimed: A Debut Vindicated
Mercedes fired back with a 'right of review,' presenting roll-hoop and helicopter footage showing Antonelli's careful merge that showed no evidence of a fast-lane violation.
The stewards relented, restoring his fourth place. It was a euphoric capstone to a wild ride.
"I learned so many things," Antonelli reflected. "Obviously it was disappointing yesterday, and probably could have been a different race, but you never know.
"It was good to experience what happens at the back, but obviously we don't want to start that far [back] anymore. It was tricky, and especially on the slick tyre it was quite scary, but I'm really happy with how it went."
For Wolff, noting the challenging conditions, it was a glimpse of a star in the making.
"Some very good drivers spun or hit the wall, it was easier to not finish than finish," said the Austrian.
"He kept his cool and it was very impressive to see. It shows he has a good future so long as the trajectory carries on as it is."
