The GWM Ute line-up has received a minor update with an increased braked towing capacity and a smaller line-up ahead of a mid-life facelift due in early 2025.

  • 2024 GWM Ute pricing and specifications
  • Towing capacity increased from 3.0 to 3.2 tonnes, except Cannon-XSR
  • Blacked-out Cannon Vanta replaces Cannon-X variant
  • Priced from $36,490 drive-away

The 2024 GWM Ute line-up has been updated with an increased braked towing capacity ahead of a facelift due between January and March 2025 with additional changes to its capabilities.

Most versions of the GWM Ute are now rated with a 3.2-tonne braked towing capacity – an increase from the 3.0-tonne limit for models produced between 2020 and mid-2024 – with the updated version arriving in Australia from this month.

The off-road-focused Cannon-XSR flagship variant retains a 3.0-tonne braked towing capacity, while all versions of the GWM Ute continue to have the mandated 750-kilogram limit for trailers without brakes shared by all passenger and light commercial vehicles.

In addition, a tailgate lock has been added to pick-up versions of the updated model, with no other specification changes.

Drive has contacted GWM Australia for more details on the revised towing capacity for the GWM Ute.

The facelifted model set to arrive at the start of 2025 will introduce a larger, more-powerful 2.4-litre turbo-diesel and a further increase to its braked towing limit at 3.5 tonnes, matching the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi Triton.

It will also become the 2025 GWM Cannon ute to bring the smaller ute in line with the larger Cannon Alpha.

However it appears the name change has come into effect early for the current model, with the GWM website partially updated to reflect the change.

The current GWM Ute Cannon-X variant has been discontinued in Australia, with the blacked-out Cannon Vanta directly replacing it at the same $43,490 drive-away price – down $3000 from when it was introduced in late 2022.

All other variants – the Cannon, Cannon CC (cab-chassis), Cannon-L, Cannon Vanta and Cannon-XSR four-wheel drives – will continue to be offered.

Information from a third-party industry price guide suggests the line-up for GWM's dual-cab ute will be amended to match its other vehicles, with the base Cannon to become the 'Cannon Premium' and the mid-spec Cannon-L to become the 'Cannon Lux' – however GWM's website has not been updated to reflect this change.

The current GWM Ute is fitted with a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel producing 120kW and 400Nm, matched to a ZF-sourced eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

The updated 2024 GWM Ute is in showrooms now.
