Plug-in hybrid power has been added to the new BMW X3 line-up with a longer electric range – and a lower price.

- New-generation plug-in hybrid brings longer electric range
- Longer equipment list than base 20 xDrive
- Priced from $102,500 before on-road costs
The 2025 BMW X3 will return plug-in hybrid (PHEV) power to the line-up next year with a new 30e xDrive PHEV variant, due by the end of March.
Despite the new-generation X3’s redesigned body, fresh interior and longer equipment list, the new plug-in hybrid is $9300 cheaper than the outgoing BMW X3 xDrive 30e PHEV.
It is still $18,000 dearer than the base-model petrol version of the new BMW X3 – but it is ‘only’ $4600 more expensive than the top seller in the outgoing X3 range, the mid-grade xDrive30i petrol.
However, the 30e xDrive is too expensive to take advantage of an exemption on Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) for PHEVs acquired via novated lease – ending April 2025 – which only applies to vehicles under the $91,387 Luxury Car Tax threshold.

BMW’s introduction of a new-generation X3 PHEV comes as rival Mercedes-Benz begins a U-turn on its move away from PHEVs.
It will live alongside the electric iX3 – which is based on the outgoing X3 range – for the time being, ahead of the arrival of an all-new iX3 on dedicated electric-car underpinnings next year, or in 2026.
Powering the new plug-in hybrid X3 is a 140kW/310Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and a 135kW/250Nm electric motor, which combine for 220kW and 450Nm.
The 19.7kWh battery pack is rated to deliver up to 91km of electric-only driving range based on more lenient Australian testing – compared to 81-90km under stricter European WLTP protocols.

A 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.2 seconds is claimed, towards a 215km/h top speed – with the vehicle capable of 140km/h in electric mode.
For comparison, the outgoing xDrive 30e uses a 135kW/300Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, 80kW/265Nm electric motor and 12kWh battery for 215kW/420Nm combined.
The previous model quoted 41km of electric range according to Australian testing, but it was quicker, claiming 0-100km/h in 6.1 seconds.
AC charging at up to 11kW is quoted for the latest X3 30e xDrive, for a two-hour 15-minute empty-to-full recharge – compared to a 3.7kW maximum, and circa three-hour, 45-minute charge for the outgoing model.
Fuel consumption of 1.6L/100km is claimed, as well as CO2 emissions of 38g/km.
Helping to justify the PHEV’s price premium over the petrol is extra equipment, including the Comfort Package offered as a $4000 option on the base 20 xDrive.
It is also fitted as standard with a panoramic glass roof. This is included as part of a $6000 Enhancement Package on the 20 xDrive; without this feature, the price of the pack on the 30e xDrive drops to $4000.
The 2025 BMW X3 30e xDrive is due in Australian showrooms early next year.
