
2025 Mazda CX-5 updated months before new-model debut

A ‘new’ Mazda CX-5 is only months away, but it isn’t the next-generation model that will take the fight to the top-selling Toyota RAV4.
The top-selling 2025 Mazda CX-5 family SUV has been updated for the New Year, due to arrive in local showrooms in June, despite a new-generation version expected to be revealed before year's end.
The 2025 CX-5 line-up adds a new grade – a front-wheel-drive (FWD) G25 Touring – while the all-wheel-drive (AWD) G25 Maxx Sport has been axed, and there are other changes across the line-up.
Prices are yet to be confirmed for the updated range. The outgoing CX-5 is priced from $36,740 to $55,150 plus on-road costs.
Newly fitted to all Touring grades is Mazda’s Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS), as well as stop-start adaptive cruise control with lane centring, known as Cruising and Traffic Support (CTS) – both features previously exclusive to more expensive versions.
Front parking sensors can now also be found on the second-from-bottom G25 Maxx Sport grade, while adaptive LED headlights are now standard on the second-from-top GT SP.
As before, there are three petrol engine choices available after the discontinuation of the turbo-diesel in October 2023, kicking off with a 2.0-litre non-turbo four-cylinder found only in the base FWD G20 Maxx.
From there, the Maxx Sport (FWD), Touring (FWD and AWD), GT SP (AWD), and Akera (AWD) can be had with a 2.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder engine, while the latter two can also be optioned with a 2.5-litre turbo four-cylinder engine.
Engine outputs carryover from last year, with the 2.0-litre engine making 115kW/200Nm, the 2.5-litre engine producing 140kW/252Nm, and the turbocharged 2.5-litre punching out 170kW/420Nm.
All engines are paired with six-speed automatic transmissions, as the manual was discontinued in late 2022.
Prices are also expected to rise with the added standard equipment, but to what extent Mazda Australia is yet to reveal.
For reference, the outgoing line-up kicks off at $36,740 before on-road costs for the FWD G20 Maxx and tops out at $55,150 for the AWD G35 Akera.
This is likely the final update for the second-generation CX-5, which launched in 2017 and has been a consistent top-seller for Mazda Australia since.
A third-generation CX-5 has been confirmed by the brand with hybrid powertrains in the mix to better combat the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, and Kia Sportage, with the latest reports indicating a reveal by the end of September 2025.
This means the next-generation CX-5 could arrive in local showrooms early next year.
