The battery-powered supercar can be seen reaching 120km/h before jumping over a 2.5m pothole and tyre spikes.
Yangwang – BYD's luxury division – has once again drawn attention online after posting footage of its electric U9 supercar jumping over potholes and tyre spikes.
In the one-minute video – reshared by US news outlet CarBuzz on YouTube – the performance car can be seen accelerating from a standstill to 120km/h at a racetrack before it jumps over a 2.5m-wide pothole 200m down the track.
Yangwang claims the electric hypercar covered a six-metre distance in the air while jumping over the pothole before it was seen leaping over a four-metre stretch of tyre spikes – individually measuring 3.5cm in height – 180m from the pothole.
At the end of the video, the battery-powered U9 is then seen gliding over a patch of what appears to be brightly coloured dust strips – all seemingly while driving in an autonomous mode.
Yangwang is no stranger to generating social media buzz with gimmicks, with the Chinese car maker previously showcasing the U9 dancing and jumping on several occasions.
The electric supercar utilises BYD's DiSus X hydraulic suspension system that can actively control the position of each wheel to propel itself into the air at speed as seen in the video, jump on the spot, or drive with three wheels touching the ground.
According to BYD, the DiSus-X suspension tech allows for a “maximum adjustable suspension travel of up to 75mm” and a “peak single-axis lifting speed” of 500mm per second.
The U9 from Yangwang – a sub-brand of BYD – is powered by four electric motors with combined outputs of 960kW and 1680Nm.
The Chinese car maker claims the battery-powered supercar has a top speed of 309km/h, and can reach 100km/h from standstill in 2.36 seconds.
BYD Yangwang unveiled the U9 supercar in 2023 while deliveries commenced in 2024. The luxury vehicle is priced from ¥CH1.68 million ($AU368,354) in its native China.
However, EVDirect – BYD’s Australian distributor – previously told local media the electric hypercar is not planned for to Australia.
Instead, the Yangwang U8 luxury SUV could come to Australia after a right-hand drive version of the car was spotted testing in China.
While EVDirect is yet to confirm if the Yangwang U8 will be sold locally, three U8 SUVs were displayed at various BYD dealerships on numerous occasions last year, suggesting the distributor is considering the car for local showrooms.
