General Motors has responded to Triple Eight Race Engineering’s shock decision to ditch the Camaro for the Mustang from 2026.

Triple Eight Race Engineering dropped a bombshell last week, revealing their plan to return to Ford from 2026 and become the brand's official homologation team for the V8 Supercars Championship.

The announcement was made simultaneously in Australia and the USA via a live stream during Ford Performance’s racing season launch at its North Carolina headquarters.

The move is a major blow to General Motors, as Triple Eight has served as its designated Supercars homologation team since 2017.

The leading team has also delivered significant success, including nine drivers’ championships, and seven Bathurst 1000 wins since 2010.

Despite this, GM has reaffirmed its commitment to staying in the sport – at least for another season.

“GM has had a long and highly successful partnership with Triple Eight Race Engineering,” said Jess Bala, Managing Director General Motors Australia and New Zealand.

We share the disappointment with fans about Triple Eight's decision, and the news that they will be moving to Ford in 2026.

Eyes forward on the 2025 Supercars season –  we look forward to extending our full support to all the Chevrolet Racing Camaro teams, for another year of on track success."

Triple Eight Managing Director and Team Principal, Jamie Whincup, revealed that they initiated contact after conducting an audit and exploring all possible options last year.

“It quickly became obvious that partnering with Ford was by far the best option for us moving into the future,” said Whincup.

Their inspirational road cars, their motorsport program worldwide, I could confidently say it’s unrivalled.”

Whincup went on to highlight their commitment to assisting GM with the transition and emphasised the importance of the brand’s continued presence in the sport.

“We will do everything we can to make sure the GM brand continues in Supercars, the more brands in the sport, the better,” Whincup stated.

This season, GM will be represented by Triple Eight, Erebus Motorsport, Matt Stone Racing, PremiAir Racing, Brad Jones Racing and Team 18 in Supercars.

Ford’s line-up includes Tickford Racing, Walkinshaw Andretti United, Dick Johnson Racing, Grove Racing and Blanchard Racing Team.

However, Walkinshaw Andretti United will switch from Ford to Toyota next season, becoming the first team to race the latest GR Supra in the series.
