Nothing stands in the way of the Sherp N 1200, not even on other planets.

This Ukranian all-terrain vehicle is so rugged and capable, it is used on a remote deep-space mining colony, fictionally of course, in the 2024 film, Alien: Romulus.

The Quadro Sherp UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle) is described as being "the most cross-country vehicle on earth", and with the ability to clamber over obstacles up to one meter in height, it's not hard to see why.

Developed in Ukraine in 2012, the amphibious Sherp can operate in any climate and on any terrain thanks to its huge low-pressure tyres (that can be deflated and inflated on the fly by using the engine's exhaust output), and efficient 41kW/190Nm 1.8-litre three-cylinder diesel engine.

With the ability to almost turn in space (inner radius 2.5m, outer radius 8.0m), thanks to a bobcat-like skid-steer setup, the Sherp is only marginally longer than a Suzuki Jimny (3480mm vs 3984mm) but weighs 2350kg to the Suzuki’s petite 1095kg. The futuristic Sherp is significantly taller (2846mm vs 1720mm) and wider (2520mm vs 1645mm) than a Jimny though. For context, the original Hummer H1 was 2197mm wide – over 30cm narrower than the Sherp.

The huge tyres at each corner of the car make the Sherp so outer-worldly looking, that four variants, including the six-wheeled Sherp Shuttle, were used as fictional Weyland Yutani mining vehicles in the science-fiction film Alien: Romulus.

Although not legal to drive on public roads (without a permit), the Sherp is exported globally, with a 2020 example sold at auction this week on online car sales platform Bring-a-Trailer. Note that it could fit in a standard Australian lane (3.5m wide) but it would only have about 50cm each side to play with.

This green and black Sherp, located in Colorado USA, has nine seats (two up front, and seven in the back) and only 21-hours of reported operation time.

Access to the cabin is through the large swing-out front door – like a BMW Isetta but top-hinged – and to keep you comfortable in any situation, the Sherp has air conditioning, a rear view camera, USB-power outlets and a digital status display.

This particular example sold for $US120,000 ($A190k), which is not much less than the base new price of a Sherp N in the USA ($US126k). View the full auction listing here.

If you are hankering for something just a little bit more capable (although not much bigger) than a Suzuki Jimny, the Sherp UTV is available in Australia through Patriot Campers.
