The Porsche 917K from the Le Mans movie, currently owned by Jerry Seinfeld, is now heading to the auction block.
The legendary Porsche 917K that starred in the film, Le Mans, is up for sale.
Purchased in 1970 from the Porsche factory by Steve McQueen and Solar Productions, the 917K was the hero car piloted by McQueen during race sequences in the 1971 movie.
Along with its time on the silver screen, Porsche’s 917 line has achieved incredible success on the track, including back-to-back victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971.
The 917K has passed through the hands of several notable owners, including British racing drivers Brian Redman and Richard Attwood.
The car’s current owner, comedian and passionate Porsche enthusiast Jerry Seinfeld, has showcased it at prestigious events such as the Monterey Historic Automobile Races and the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
Wrapped in a distinctive Gulf blue and orange livery, the rare Porsche is powered by a 4.5-litre flat-12 engine developing 427kW and 496Nm. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission.
The rare icon underwent a restoration, which was completed just last year, and included a refurbishment of brakes and suspension, along with a refresh of mechanical components.
The car is due to go under the hammer on 18 January, with the auction held by Mecum Auctions in Kissimmee, Florida.
The impressive machine last sold for just over $AU2.1 million, while Chassis No. 917-024, owned by Swiss racing driver, Jo Siffert, sold at Gooding & Company's 2017 Pebble Beach auction for just over $AU22 million.
