One of Australia’s rarest new cars is struggling to find buyers, amid prices higher than a Tesla despite less driving range and cabin space.

Peugeot has turned to discounting its sole electric passenger vehicle – the E-308 hatch – as it is yet to sell a batch of 14 examples priced higher than a Tesla Model 3.

The small shipment of E-308 electric cars announced in November was pitched as an “exclusive customer evaluation program” to test the waters for a formal showroom introduction for the vehicle at a later date.

More than four months later, Peugeot is still yet to sell all 14 cars, and has just cut $6000 off the price, now $59,990 drive-away nationwide rather than $65,990.

VFACTS industry data shows just four Peugeot E-308s have hit Australian roads, and of those, classifieds websites show at least one is a dealer demonstrator on New South Wales registration plates at a dealer in Melbourne (below).

Another is shown at a different dealer in Victoria, albeit without registration plates, and at an even lower price of $58,388 drive-away

At least one of the four vehicles has been sold to a private buyer, but it still leaves more than two-thirds of the 14 vehicles unallocated and yet to be sold.

Peugeot said in November that customers who had registered their interest in the E-308 would be given “priority” on securing one of the 14 cars, before access to the general public was opened a day later.

For the price, buyers get a 400km driving range rating based on European WLTP testing, and 100kW DC fast charging from a 115kW/270Nm electric motor and 51kWh battery pack.

The new $59,990 drive-away price places it in line with a Tesla Model 3 RWD, which has 513km of range, a larger battery and about twice the power in a larger vehicle with more cabin and boot space.

Asked to confirm E-308 stock had not sold out, a Peugeot Australia representative said: “Yes, there are limited vehicles remaining in dealers for purchase. Customers interested in this offer are encouraged to enquire via the Peugeot website.

The announcement of the E-308 “evaluation program” came six weeks after Peugeot all but halted its roll-out of electric cars due to a “rapidly evolving and dynamic” market.

Among the casualties were a full-scale E-308 showroom launch, as well as the arrival of the E-208, updated E-2008, new E-3008 and other models.

It has promised its electric-car range will expand beyond the E-Partner and E-Expert vans “from 2025”, but is yet to disclose which models it will introduce.

Peugeot sales were down 24.6 per cent last year to 1896 vehicles, its lowest result in at least 25 years.

Deliveries this year are already down 41.6 per cent to just 206 cars sold in January and February.
