As households and venues prepare to host Grand Final parties, police are urging drivers to plan before they drink.

Police are warning drivers not to drink and drive over the weekend, with AFL Grand Final parties expected across the country.

Victoria Police have launched Operation Scoreboard, emphasising a zero-tolerance approach to drivers affected by alcoholand drugs over the state’s long weekend.

Partygoers are being urged to plan ahead and utilise alternative forms of transportation if they plan to drink, with police set to be out in force.

In 2023, more than 115,000 tests were conducted by officers, with 343 offenders caught driving impaired.

Authorities estimate driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol contributed to at least one in four fatalities so far this year.

“Alcohol and drugs continue to contribute significantly to serious injury and fatal collisions, and yet it's completely avoidable,” said Assistant Commissioner Road Policing, Glenn Weir.

“The message is clear – alcohol, drugs and driving don't mix, so if you're planning to celebrate over the AFL Grand Final weekend, plan ahead and leave the car at home, arrange a designated driver or utilise alternative transport options.”

Operation Scoreboard runs from 12:01 am Thursday 26 September to 11:59 pm Sunday 29 September 2024.
