Porsche Macan wins Best Luxury Electric Vehicle under $150K
Today at 07:00 PM
Blending all-electric motoring with a premium cabin, cutting-edge technology, engaging driving dynamics, and a desirable badge, the new Porsche Macan is the Best Luxury EV under $150K winner.
Everyone's definition of luxury can be different, but when it comes to electric cars it means style and status without compromise.
And as electric vehicles (EVs) come to the fore in Australia, no segment is at the vanguard of tailpipe-emissions-free motoring more so than the luxury space.
After all, buyers are already willing to spend a premium for comfort, design, performance, buying experience, and badge cache, so the extra spend on an all-electric powertrain doesn't equate to a substantial jump in price.
Last year, the BMW iX took out top honours in this Drive Car of the Year category, but with so much activity in this space in the last 12 months, it unfortunately didn't make the cut for a finalist in 2025.
This left three contenders to duke it out for bragging rights, all of which are brand-new entrants to the market.
The Polestar 3 put up a convincing argument, offering potent performance and Swedish styling, but as an emerging brand still trying to find its footing in Australia, the badge-cred was stronger in competitors.
Like the Cadillac and its Lyriq.
As the first model to come to Australia, the Cadillac Lyriq is a tempting option, especially given its competitive price point and old-school American luxury vibes.
However, it was let down somewhat by lacklustre performance and a sedate driving dynamic.
Which leaves the winner in the Best Luxury Electric Vehicle under $150K title fight.

Winner: Porsche Macan
Drive's pick: Porsche Macan 4 from $134,400 before on-road costs
Porsche Macan key facts:
- Priced from $128,400 to $184,400 (range)
- Three-year warranty
- XXX-XXXkWh/100km consumption (claimed)
Why the Porsche Macan won:
- Scintillating driving dynamics
- Tech-heavy and premium cabin
- Phenomenal driving range and ultra-fast charging
The Porsche badge has been synonymous with luxury for decades now, but moving the Porsche Macan mid-size SUV to an all-electric line-up was a risky move.
The gamble has paid off though, because even with an electric powertrain, the Macan still delivers on the thrills and upmarket attention-to-detail worthy of the Porsche name.
Four variants are available, with all but the top-spec Turbo coming in under $150,000.
Our pick of the bunch is the Macan 4, which scores a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive set-up that punches out a sizeable 300kW/650Nm for a zero-to-100km/h sprint in a claimed 5.2 seconds.
While those outputs aren't supercar scaring by any stretch, the Macan 4 arguably balances pace, panache and pricing (at $134,400) perfectly, with the practicality you would expect from a car this shape and size.
Family buyers won't have many problems fitting children in the second row, or a pram in the boot, have no problem here, and there is also a small front storage compartment too.
All owners, however, will appreciate the WLTP-certified 613km of driving range that is more than enough for the average Australian weekly commute.
Charging is also convenient, thanks to the Macan's new-generation architecture that affords it a maximum 270kW input for a 10-80 per cent top-up in as little as 21 minutes.
Ultimately, the Porsche Macan EV offers the best of tomorrow, today.
