Stolen Ferrari found thanks to Apple AirPods

Two repeat offenders are in custody for the theft of a $704,000 V12 Ferrari after earbuds left in the supercar revealed its location.
A set of Apple AirPods have been used to find a stolen Ferrari after their geolocation function revealed the car's location – and led to the arrest of the two alleged car thieves.
Carscoops reports that Waterbury Auto Theft Taskforce in Connecticut, United States (US), located the stolen Ferrari 812 GTS – priced at $703,988 before on-road costs in Australian showrooms – by tracking a set of AirPods the owner had left in the car.
Accounts by news website WFSB – cited by Carscoops – said the AirPods enabled police to track down the V12-powered Ferrari to a petrol station on South Main Street in Waterbury – around 100km and an hour's drive from Greenwich, New York, where it was stolen from.
Upon confronting the occupants of the stolen car at the petrol station, a pair of suspects made a run for it – abandoning the vehicle in the process.
In yet another tech twist, one of the thieves left his Apple iPhone in the vehicle, enabling police to connect him – and his associate – to the crime and make an arrest.
Investigations revealed the two thieves alternated driving duties in the stolen Ferrari – the same model a South Australian was caught driving 76km/h over the speed limit in earlier this year – with one of the suspects well known to the authorities with pending charges for multiple car thefts and violent crimes.
After a spate of car thefts in the area, Waterbury police are looking at the pair's links to other stolen vehicles – all thanks to a set of Apple AirPods.
Police advised residents to be more vigilant as the cooler winter months approach.
"We just don't live in that day and age anymore where we can leave our cars running to warm up or our cars running while we run into the store," Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo said to WFSB.
"Take care of your property. Just be mindful that if you don't, somebody else will."
Apple offers a digital car key in the US – and Europe – with the feature being rolled out in Australia, with brands including BYD introducing a digital key for Apple and Android smartphone users on its Seal and Sealion 6 models.
