Video: US man filmed stealing tow truck to save his ute

The man is shown on video appearing to instigate a physical altercation with the tow truck driver, before climbing into the vehicle to carry his pick-up away, damaging nearby parked cars in the process.

A road-rage incident in the US has left a trail of damaged vehicles in its wake, after a man was filmed allegedly stealing a truck in a desperate bid to avoid his pick-up from getting towed.

The video – posted to social media platforms X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube – shows the unnamed offender getting out of the Chevrolet Silverado and jumping over the towing platform before instigating a physical altercation with the tow truck driver.

According to local news outlet News 12 The Bronx, the Silverado owner was reportedly blocking the front doors of an industrial loading zone in Brooklyn, New York on 7 September 2024, which led to the tow truck being called to remove the vehicle.

During the incident, the thief jumped in the tow truck and attempted to flee the scene, stalling the vehicle once before driving off.

In his haste, the Chevrolet’s door is seen to swing open, scraping other parked cars in the process – including significant damage caused to a nearby Toyota RAV4 – as he continued to drive the tow truck from the scene.

After turning right at a traffic light, the driver allegedly lost control of the stolen tow truck, resulting in the towed Silverado falling off the platform and landing on its side.

A city bus is then said to have collided with the stricken Chevrolet, as the driver allegedly fled the scene on foot, as reported by US publication CarBuzz.

The New York Police Department has yet to publish an official statement on its website regarding the matter.
