Ford’s Mustang GTD reigns supreme as the quickest American car in the world at the Nurburgring, but it reckons it can be quicker.

Though Ford has set an impressive six-minute, 57.685 time at the Nurburgring with its 2025 Mustang GTD, the brand believes it can do even better.

Speaking to Drive, Mustang GTD Chief Program Engineer Greg Goodall said the car is capable of a quicker lap time.

"We're pretty proud [of Mustang GTD's time]. We're happy, but not content," Goodall said.

"We met the initial goal, but we're not done, we're going for more.

"I don't want to speculate, it doesn't matter until you do it on the track, right? So, if we’re to throw numbers out there, they're baseless."

Goodall revealed the 6min 57.685sec recorded time was conducted back in August, and that Ford has been trying to lay down a quicker lap since.

"We did a run, it was 6min 57sec. We went out in August – August 7 – we got three laps in, and all three laps were under seven minutes, which is unbelievable," he explained.

"And then we've had absolutely terrible luck going back since then, we've been rained out multiple times.

"We learned a lot out there in that very first run. It was the first time Dirk [Muller, who drove the Mustang GTD during its lap record] was in the car on the track by himself.

"The car is just better, more mature now than it was then.

"We lost some time on the track, but 6min 57sec is a good start, and we're hoping to go back and get even better.

"We're very confident it can do better."

It is unclear when Ford will have another crack at the Nurburgring, but its initial 6min 57sec time already makes it one of the quickest production cars around the circuit on record, and the number-one model from a US manufacturer, beating the Dodge Viper ACR.

However, Goodall said the next step for Ford is to start delivering cars to customers, and then the Mustang GTD may start cutting laps at other big-name tracks around the world.

"We want our customers, want the media, to actually use the car and enjoy it," he said.

"That's what I'm 100 per cent focused on right now, is getting through that launch curve and getting cars out to customers.

"There may be plans to do more of those things [aim for lap records at other tracks].

"I wouldn't say it's necessarily a mission that we're going to knock off lap time records, but all in the name of trying to make a great product for our customers."
