A young content creator is facing widespread backlash after losing control of his McLaren supercar while looking at his mobile phone – but it only gets worse from there.

A 20-year-old YouTube star has crashed his McLaren 570S Spider while live-streaming and reading comments from his mobile phone.

Footage of the live stream shows Doherty looking at his phone while behind the wheel of his 570S on a highway in the rain, and the moment he accelerates – immediately losing control of the McLaren and crashing into a barrier.

Doherty then begins filming himself, asking a good samaritan to hold his phone as he’s dragged out of a broken window – seemingly more concerned about his wrecked car than his injured cameraman trapped in the car.

Video posted online then shows Doherty asking his bloodied colleague to hold the camera as he walks around the wreck in disbelief.

A few moments later, Doherty hands his phone to a friend to begin filming, asking him to “make it look good”.

Both Doherty and his passenger were taken to hospital following the crash, according to US magazine Road & Track, with his cameraman receiving stitches for cuts to his head.

It’s understood Doherty was streaming on social media platform Kick to an audience of 185,000 at the time of the incident, according to Sportskeeda.

Commenters have expressed outrage at Doherty’s actions – from being on his phone when the crash occured, to expressing concern over his car and consciously choosing to film himself over the immediate welfare of his cameraman.

The McLaren – priced in Australia from $435,750 before on-road costs when new – is powered by a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8, sending 419kW and 600Nm to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

McLaren claims a 0-100km/h time of 3.2 seconds.

Doherty purchased the supercar approximately a year ago – when he was 19 – for $US202,850 ($AU298,300), according to a video on his YouTube channel, which has 14.9 million subscribers.

Kick immediately suspended Doherty’s channel, with the live stream seemingly violating several rules under the website’s community guidelines.

It’s not the first time Doherty has lost control of a vehicle he was driving.

In March 2024, he posted a video of himself rolling his Can-Am off-road buggy “30 seconds after getting it”.

In November 2023, Doherty was driving a golf cart in circles – saying to his audience to post “ones in the chat if I should crash” – before flipping the cart into its side, causing his girlfriend to hit her head on the concrete driveway.

Doherty is estimated by International Business Times to have a net worth of up to $US5 million ($AU7.35 million) is also understood to be the owner of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter limousine, a Tesla Model X, and a Lamborghini Huracan.
