2026 F1 regulations – FIA reversal on new cars: here are the changes
Yesterday at 03:45 AM
As the new F1 season approaches, the FIA is continuing to develop the 2026 car concept, but the latest regulation update has brought some very important changes. This urgency to finalize the technical regulations is due to the fact that, as of January 1, teams will be able to start developing the new cars. The designs are already ready in CAD, and this rule change could reshuffle things before testing even begins.
Changes for 2026
The keyword for the next-generation cars is sustainability. To reduce fuel consumption, a much simpler power unit has been introduced, paired with an “Override” mode in which electric power will play a more important role than the internal combustion engine.
The two major changes between Issue 8 and Issue 9 are in the front wing and the floor. These new modifications will allow the car to achieve greater aerodynamic efficiency, with the goal of enhancing stability.
The front wing has been completely redesigned in terms of flow direction. Whereas the desired effect was previously outwash, Issue 9 has entirely revised the concept, transforming it into upwash with the addition of a new flap. The goal is to direct the flow toward the upper surface of the tire. Additionally, a new deflector has been added under the wing to increase airflow toward the floor.
The focus of the analysis then shifts to the floor, where the car has undergone changes in the bargeboards and the entrance. The first change involves the addition of a support aimed at reducing the flexibility of the component, along with a redesign that makes the bargeboard taller and shorter. The floor entrance has also been visibly modified with the addition of fences to direct the airflow underneath the car and a shape change to a more "square" design.
