Alfa Romeo driver Zhou Guanyu hopes Charles Leclerc wins 2022 Formula 1 title

Chinese motorsports racing driver Zhou Guanyu says that he would like Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc to win the 2022 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship. The Alfa Romeo driver added that his friendship with Charles Leclerc, which goes way back to the time when they were both members of the Ferrari Driver Academy, is the main reason he is supporting the Ferrari driver in his fight with Max Verstappen for the world championship. In a recent interview, Zhou Guanyu confirmed that he feels it would be best for the sport to have a different world champion each season, rather than repeat winners. “To be honest, I would like Charles to win,” the Chinese motorsports racing driver said. “But I think Red Bull are looking very strong at the minute. They keep getting faster so it’s a tough one, but I do like to have a different world champion every year. He’s a good friend in the paddock, so I have to put money on him!” – he added. Zhou admitted that he is happy to see other teams fighting for the top spots after many years of Mercedes dominating the sport, with back-to-back championships. “This year, Red Bull and Ferrari are clearly ahead. I think it’s much better than two years ago. I remember while I was watching that it was always a Silver Arrows [Mercedes] 1-2. So, this is more exciting.” – he said. Zhou is the latest in a long list of Formula 2 graduates to earn a seat in Formula 1. In the last five seasons, eight drivers from the current grid were selected based on their performance in Formula 2: Zhou, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, George Russell, Mick Schumacher and Alex Albon. By contrast, the three oldest drivers on the grid are Fernando Alonso (40), Lewis Hamilton (37) and Sebastian Vettel (34), who have a combined 13 Drivers’ Championships between them. The Alfa Romeo driver was asked to share his thoughts on the ‘next generation’ of Formula 1 drivers and explained that he was looking forward to see how he and his former junior rivals would be able to perform when faced with the opposition of top class drivers like Lewis Hamilton or Sebastian Vettel: “I’m excited because at least half of the guys [on the F1 grid] I have competed against, because we’re in the same generation, or a couple years older [than me]. It’s nice to have that because you know how all of the guys drive and the way that their driving style is. So from a young age I’ve known a few of these guys in the early stages. I think in every sport when you have young generation it’s always interesting to see what different kinds of characters they evolved into.” Zhou Guanyu concluded.
