Carlos Sainz and a possible return to Ferrari: "Never say never, my door will always be open"
Carlos Sainz is not easily given up on. Scuderia Ferrari knows this well, having sacrificed the Spaniard only because they saw an opportunity in the winter to sign Lewis Hamilton—the only driver, alongside Max Verstappen, for whom Maranello might consider overhauling their plans.
Even during a turbulent 2024 Formula 1 season, both physically (Carlos Sainz had to miss the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix at the Jeddah circuit) and psychologically, with the disappointment of parting ways with Ferrari and the search for a satisfying future arrangement that undoubtedly drained some of his energy, Smooth Operator proved to be a consummate professional and secured two of the team's five victories this season.
Carlos Sainz's comments
Despite the criticism he has received from some fans, Carlos Sainz holds Ferrari and the support it garners worldwide close to his heart. Just as he enthusiastically embraced the opportunity in 2021, he would be ready to return in the future: "My door will always be open for Ferrari. Never say never, but for the short and medium term, I am 100% committed to the decision I made mid-year, and I am looking forward to the challenge with Williams." – the Spanish driver pointed out.
"Giving my best to Ferrari in my final year is something I would have always done," he added. "It's tough to compete in 24 races knowing that you'll leave at the end of the year, especially knowing that I am a driver who likes to think about medium- and long-term projects and guide the team's development. This year has been a challenge for me, and I've experienced some ups and downs." – the future Williams driver continued.
Those ups and downs have continued recently: after his win in Mexico City, Carlos Sainz had a tough time in the Brazilian Grand Prix at the Interlagos circuit, crashing in both qualifying and the race. Nevertheless, over the last four weekends, he has scored 60 points—20 more than Oscar Piastri, a statistic that bolsters the team's confidence in the Constructors' Championship battle against McLaren.
