Formula 1 is set to modify its testing program for 2026, though the change is unlikely to be permanent. Drivers have complained about the severe reduction in test days, but the planned expansion for next season is driven by a specific reason.

In 2026, F1 teams will face a regulatory overhaul that will force them to completely redesign their cars. For this reason, category organizers are considering adding extra track days before the season begins. This would give teams more time to address potential issues arising from the new technical regulations.

The test program
Teams will not only have to start from scratch in building their cars but also rush to do so. In addition to the usual three days in Bahrain, extra sessions will be scheduled, specifically one month earlier than this year's tests.

Teams will return to Barcelona, where they will be able to run from January 26 to 30. However, they won't have access to the track for all five days—each team must choose three days based on its needs. The details of the program are still being finalized, but it appears that the tests will be held behind closed doors. Updates on possible TV coverage will follow.

For now, the focus remains on 2025, with the season kicking off in the night between March 13 and 14, when the first free practice sessions take place. The Australian Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday, March 16, at 5:00 AM (CET).
