What are the main cementation works planned?

In recent years, the Imola racetrack has undergone significant infrastructure expansion, including the construction of a VIP walkway and the enlargement of hospitality areas. However, the Parco delle Acque Minerali has been particularly affected, as parts of it have been reduced to make way for new structures. Environmentalists claim that this continuous cementation is slowly eliminating one of the city’s main green lungs, worsening noise pollution and negatively impacting residents’ quality of life.

The circuit is owned by Formula Imola, a company entirely controlled by ConAMI (Consorzio Azienda Multiservizi Intercomunali), with the Municipality of Imola as its majority shareholder. This situation has raised suspicions of favoritism and exemptions that allegedly allowed the racetrack to expand without strictly adhering to environmental regulations. Activists accuse local politics of sacrificing environmental protection to favor economic interests tied to motorsport.

Balancing development and environmental protection seems difficult to achieve in this context. With increasing global pressure to reduce emissions and adopt more sustainable practices, motorsport finds itself at a crossroads. The protests at Imola are just one example of how the sports industry can conflict with environmental needs.
