F1 2026: more testing days to prepare for new technical regulations

Formula 1 is gearing up for one of the biggest technical revolutions in its history, and to face it in the best possible way, teams will have more pre-season testing days than in recent years.
According to Motorsport.com, the first session will take place at the end of January at the Barcelona circuit, giving teams the chance to work well in advance on the new cars and updated power units ahead of the 2026 season.
More Track Time: Details of the New Program
Over the past three years, teams have only had three days of testing before the season started. However, with the introduction of new power units and revised chassis regulations, F1 has decided to extend the available time.
The current plan includes a five-day shakedown in Barcelona from January 26 to 30. During this period, teams will be allowed to select three test days at their discretion to optimize their work based on weather conditions and potential technical issues.
This approach is reminiscent of 2022 when F1 introduced ground effect and granted extra test days to help teams adapt to the new rules.
Reliability and New Technical Challenges
The 2026 regulation changes will not only impact aerodynamics but will also introduce fully sustainable fuels and a more advanced hybrid system. For this reason, ensuring the reliability of the new cars will be the teams’ top priority.
The early start of testing will allow teams to identify and resolve potential issues with more margin, avoiding last-minute surprises. In 2022, for instance, the porpoising phenomenon only emerged during pre-season testing, creating difficulties for many teams.
From Barcelona to Bahrain
After the initial test in Barcelona, testing will continue in Bahrain with two three-day sessions:
– February 12-14
– February 18-20
In recent years, the Sakhir circuit has become the primary venue for pre-season testing due to its more stable weather conditions compared to Europe. With these changes, F1 aims to provide teams with better preparation, minimizing unexpected issues and ensuring a more balanced and competitive 2026 championship.
