F1 and MotoGP, Liberty Media does not solve the calendar conflict problem

There will be 9 overlapping events, with MotoGP running more than 40% of its races simultaneously with F1. But it's still a (small) improvement over 2024.

First F1-MotoGP season with Liberty Media

With the presentation of the draft calendar for the 2025 MotoGP season, it marks the first true season where both MotoGP and Formula 1 are simultaneously managed by entertainment giant Liberty Media. Although some improvements have been made, the U.S. multinational – which also owns Live Nation, the leading concert organizing company worldwide – has not drastically changed the calendars compared to last season, so 9 out of 22 motorcycle Grands Prix will take place on the same weekend as F1 events.

F1-MotoGP calendar conflicts

Thus, the total number of conflicting events drops to 40.91% of the races organized during the season. It's still a small step forward, considering that in 2024 the calendar conflicts between the two premier motorsport categories reached 50%, with 11 out of 22 MotoGP events – it would have been 10 had the Kazakhstan GP taken place as scheduled, replaced on September 22 by the second GP at Misano – held simultaneously with Formula 1.

It's very difficult to imagine calendars without conflicts, as in recent years both championships have expanded significantly, reaching record numbers (already seen in 2024) of 22 GPs for MotoGP and 24 for F1. At the same time, pay-TV broadcasters and streaming services sometimes view overlaps favorably as they can offer subscribers a race binge over a few hours, especially when the two categories race in different time zones. However, there are also situations – like last weekend between Misano and Singapore – where there is almost total overlap of race times, which risks harming TV schedules.

Which events overlap between F1 and MotoGP

That said, in 2025 the first conflict will already occur on March 16, during the opening weekend of F1 in Australia (MotoGP starts on March 2 in Thailand) with the MotoGP race taking place in Argentina. A similar situation, with very different time zones, will occur in the final part of the season, with four consecutive MotoGP races overlapping with Formula 1. From October 5 to November 9, 2025, the races in Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, and Portugal will coincide with the F1 Grands Prix in Singapore, the United States, Mexico, and Brazil, respectively.

There are four events where we might see partial or total overlaps, with both categories racing in the same or very similar time zones: April 13, with F1 in Bahrain and MotoGP in Qatar; May 25, with Monaco and Silverstone; June 29, with the conflict between the Red Bull Ring F1 and Assen; and September 7, with the Italian GP in Monza on the same weekend as the race in Catalunya at the Montmeló circuit. Perhaps, given the shared ownership of the two series, fewer conflicts could have been expected…
