F1 Canadian GP changes date in 2026: reasons behind this decision

Starting in 2026, the Canadian GP will change its date. Traditionally, the weekend in Montreal takes place in June, interrupting the European races in the Formula 1 calendar.
However, some changes will be made, effective only in two years. The F1 leadership and the organizers of the Canadian GP have reached an agreement to move the race on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit a few weeks earlier.
In fact, starting in 2026, the Canadian GP will take place on the third or fourth weekend of May. This is a strategic decision but also a sustainable one. Formula 1 is working to make the calendar as manageable as possible for the teams, who are engaged in the longest season ever this year. Traveling from one continent to another is not easy.
Instead, by moving the Canadian Grand Prix to May after Miami, there will be sustainability benefits for everyone. The goal is to consolidate the European leg, thus avoiding an additional transatlantic crossing for F1 teams each year. This also leads to significant reductions in carbon emissions.
The announcement comes after the rescheduling of the 2026 Monaco GP to the first weekend of June.
“I am incredibly grateful to the promoter and all the government partners involved in the Canadian Grand Prix, from the local to the provincial and national government,” said Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula 1.
Jean-Philippe Paradis, CEO of Octane Racing Group, stated: “This change to the calendar is an important step in our commitment, as well as Formula 1’s, toward a more sustainable future.”
He added: “The change in date fully aligns with the dynamic strategic vision implemented by our team, in collaboration with our stakeholders, which is fully focused on the goal of delivering an extraordinary Canadian Grand Prix experience in a more sustainable and inclusive environment.”
