Ferrari and Cadillac: the plan to bring Zhou Guanyu back to Formula 1
Today at 03:44 AM
Behind Ferrari’s move to sign Zhou Guanyu lies Cadillac’s interest in the F1 driver. After his experience with Sauber, the Chinese driver is heading to Maranello to stay connected with the F1 circus. His goal is to return to the grid as soon as possible, ideally by 2026. With General Motors and Cadillac entering the scene, Zhou may become one of the top choices for the American team.
Plots, intrigues, and maneuvers on the grid. Ferrari has announced its two reserve drivers for the next season: Antonio Giovinazzi, who, after his time in Formula 1, is building a successful career in Endurance racing with the 499P, and Zhou Guanyu. The 25-year-old from Shanghai is leaving Sauber after an unclear stint, but his dream of returning to the track in a single-seater is far from over.
Two factors play in his favor. First, his years in Hinwil reveal little about his true abilities. The car never truly shone, and when it did show glimpses of performance, Zhou was often ready to seize the opportunity. Second, there is the matter of sponsorship: as the only Chinese driver with the potential to compete in Formula 1, the financial backing behind him appears to be substantial.

While it is evident that Ferrari's decision to sign Zhou Guanyu is also a nod to the Asian (and specifically Chinese) market, a third party appears to have played a role in the move. That party is Cadillac, set to make its F1 debut in 2026 with a Ferrari-powered engine. It will take at least two more years before General Motors develops its own power unit.
The team principal of the American outfit will be Graeme Lowdon, a familiar face in Formula 1 due to his past experience with Marussia. Connected to Zhou Guanyu's management, he could push for the Chinese driver to secure one of Cadillac's two seats in 2026. The former Sauber driver would bring valuable experience and could be paired with a young rookie, possibly an American.
