Ferrari confirmed for additional Pirelli tyre tests in December

The 2022 Formula 1 season is over, but some teams will still take to the track in this final part of the year, as Scuderia Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and there AlphaTauri have been confirmed for an extra Pirelli tyre testing session next month. It was believed that today’s Pirelli test at the Yas Marina circuit, alongside the young driver test, would be the final Formula 1 action in 2022, but the Italian tyre manufacturer has now announced that three more tyre tests are scheduled to help Pirelli finalize its plans for the 2023 Formula 1 championship.

At the same time, two other testing sessions will take place next year in February, when the 2022 challengers will return to the track for the test.

The French Grand Prix will not be on the calendar in 2023, but the Paul Ricard circuit will be the venue where Alfa Romeo will take part in a wet tyre test on December 3-4. Three days later, Scuderia Ferrari will hit the track at its very own Fiorano, to complete another test of the 2023 wet tyres where the F1-75 car will be in action.

Then on December 14-15, Pirelli’s focus will be on the slick tyres, as AlphaTauri takes to the track in Portugal, at the Portimao circuit, where Formula 1 raced in 2020 and 2021.

The start of February sees three more tests, the first two of which are back-to-back in France and will involve Mercedes (February 1-2, dry compounds) and AlphaTauri (February 3-4, wet tyres).

Following a break of a few days, the final testing sessions will take place at Jerez, the 4.428 km racing circuit located close to the city of Jerez de la Frontera, 90 km south of Seville and deep within the sherry-producing region in the south of Spain: Mercedes and Aston Martin have have been assigned to bring their 2022 cars back to the track for this occasion.

Pirelli’s Motorsport Director Mario Isola was asked about Pirelli plans ahead of the 2023 Formula 1 season:

“We realised it was impossible with the 2022 calendar, and also with next year’s calendar, to organise all the test sessions we needed. One idea was to use FP2, as we used in Mexico and Austin, and another possibility was to organise a test [in the] off-season. In the regulations, we can use the current cars until December 15 and from February 1 to the first race of next year’s championship, using the 2022 cars. They cannot use the test in February to develop the 2023 car. The FIA is sending an observer to each test to check the configuration and parts used on the car have been used in any of the 2022 races. We have three wet sessions, three dry sessions. You have to have some wet sessions in cold conditions because one of the targets is to try to remove the blankets from wet-weather tyres in 2023. I hope the conditions are not too cold because maybe at Fiorano in December we find the snow! But hopefully it will be good enough to have a wet-weather test.” – Pirelli motorsport boss Mario Isola concluded.
