Fred Vasseur issues unconventional directive to Ferrari F1 team before crucial Lusail GP
Today at 12:45 PM
Scuderia Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has emphasized to his Maranello team that “now is not the time to start calculating” as they find themselves engaged in a tight battle for the constructors’ championship against McLaren.
Currently, Ferrari is trailing McLaren by a mere 24 points in the standings ahead of the final two rounds of the 2024 Formula 1 campaign, but McLaren has the opportunity to claim its first title since 1998 if it outperforms Ferrari by 21 points at the upcoming Lusail race.
In last year’s Qatar Grand Prix, McLaren earned an impressive 47 points while Ferrari only managed 13. However, Carlos Sainz's absence from the race played a significant role, as the circuit was expected to be less favorable to the SF-24, which was driven by both Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc. As the Maranello team prepares for the upcoming weekend at the 5.419-kilometre Lusail International Circuit, Frederic Vasseur is keen to ensure that Ferrari focuses entirely on extracting the maximum performance during the sprint weekend, rather than becoming preoccupied with complex calculations of the points scenario.
“The Qatar GP is the last Sprint weekend of the year which, as always means the work the teams carry out back at base takes on greater importance than usual, as there is only one free practice session. There are 59 points up for grabs, but this isn't the time to start doing the maths. All we can do is execute everything perfectly to ensure that Charles and Carlos can squeeze every last drop of performance out of the SF-24.” – the Ferrari team principal pointed out at
“We have seen, especially in recent races, that Formula 1 as a whole is operating at a very high level right now, with the slightest detail often making the difference, turning the accepted status quo on its head. It's time for one last push over these next two weekends and our drivers, engineers and everyone in the team, both at the track and in Maranello are ready to give it our best shot.” – the Ferrari team boss concluded.
