Jean Todt and the Red Team
Jean Todt’s journey at Ferrari represents one of the brightest chapters in Formula 1 history. Arriving in the 1990s, Jean Todt managed to transform the Scuderia in his own image, managing to keep the group united despite some painful defeats, such as the world championships of 1997, 1998, and 1999. The turning point came in the 2000s, when he shaped an era of dominance, with Michael Schumacher as the absolute protagonist. After Ferrari, his adventure continued at the Federation, as FIA president from 2009 to 2021.
The interview with Repubblica
In Jean Todt's words to the online version of the LaRepubblica newspaper, some disappointment towards Ferrari comes through: "Since I left, I've spoken to some members of the team, but since I left the FIA, I haven't had any contact: I must say that I've been very puzzled given how much time I dedicated to this incredible company and to how many results we achieved." – the Frenchman admitted.
The former team principal and CEO then retraced his time in red: "When I arrived in 1993, it was a crumbling castle. The design area in England, at headquarters, had an old and unusable wind tunnel. But little by little, we built a jewel. I wouldn't have done anything on my own, I was good at forming and keeping a team for years, turning it into a dream team. The 14 championships won remain in the books, it was the most productive period in Ferrari's history." – he pointed out.
Jean and Michael
The relationship between Jean Todt and Michael Schumacher continues with the German champion's family, even after the accident in December 2013. Jean Todt explains, with the usual discretion that characterizes him: "The family decided not to respond to the question. I respect that choice. I see him regularly and with affection, him and his family. Our bond goes beyond the work we've done together. He's part of my life, which today is very far from Formula 1."
