Key skill Lewis Hamilton mastered in karting that could benefit Ferrari in 2025

Lewis Hamilton will join Scuderia Ferrari next season, forming a powerful driver pairing with Charles Leclerc at the iconic Italian team. This move marks a significant shift for the seven-time world champion, as he races for a team headquartered outside England for the first time in his illustrious Formula 1 career. Hamilton will also reunite with team principal Frederic Vasseur, with whom he previously worked during his GP2 days at ART.
The transition comes after a bittersweet conclusion to his decade-long tenure at Mercedes, where he clinched six world championships since joining the team in 2013. Despite his immense success, Hamilton’s frustration with Mercedes' recent form led to the decision to seek new opportunities, and his sights remain firmly set on securing a record-breaking eighth world title. Frederic Vasseur has suggested that both Hamilton and Leclerc will have the freedom to compete against one another, setting the stage for an intense inter-team battle.
Adapting to Ferrari's distinct culture may prove to be a challenge for Lewis Hamilton, who will now immerse himself in an environment steeped in Italian traditions. However, one skill he honed during his karting years could ease his transition as the season unfolds.
Lewis Hamilton's experience with the Italian language, gained during his formative years in karting, may prove invaluable. His early racing career saw him competing against future Formula 1 drivers like Nico Rosberg and Robert Kubica, navigating diverse environments that included Italian-speaking teams and circuits. Although not fluent, Hamilton's grasp of the language could help him connect more effectively with Ferrari's Italian personnel and adapt to the team's unique dynamics.
While Ferrari conducts most engineering meetings in English, cultural and linguistic differences can still present challenges. Notably, Kimi Räikkönen, who won a world championship with Ferrari in 2007, didn't speak Italian during his time at the team, demonstrating that fluency isn't essential for success. Hamilton has expressed interest in improving his Italian, though Fred Vasseur himself isn't deeply fluent in the language, which may level the playing field.
As the British driver prepares for the next chapter in his career, his karting roots and championship pedigree will undoubtedly aid his efforts to lead Ferrari back to the top of Formula 1. Journalist Edd Straw noted on The Race that while the seven-time F1 world champion is eager to improve his Italian, Fred Vasseur is not particularly fluent in the language either: "He [Hamilton] has talked of plans to work on his Italian and has pointed out that he did pick up a few Italian basics back in his karting days. However, Vasseur doesn't believe this is important. While he accepts it is of value to speak some Italian for the relationship with the mechanics and other team members, Ferrari's F1 team conducts its meetings mainly in English. Vasseur joked he could be Hamilton's teacher. The joke there being, Vasseur doesn't speak Italian at all well, despite taking lessons when he first joined Ferrari.” – the Formula 1 journalist and broadcaster pointed out.
"That said, he understands Italian very well. And remember, plenty of Ferrari stars of the past have joined the team without knowing a word of Italian. So while Hamilton is making an effort, that's more about team cohesion than anything else." – Edd Straw continued.
Lewis Hamilton will need to regain his qualifying edge
Throughout his illustrious career, Lewis Hamilton has been known for his exceptional qualifying pace, often leaving his competitors in the dust. There were times when he seemed almost untouchable in a single-lap shootout. However, in the 2024 season, the seven-time world champion struggled to find that same level of speed, often being outpaced by his teammate, George Russell.
Hamilton's qualifying performance this season saw him fall short in 19 out of 24 sessions, securing just a single front-row start at the British Grand Prix. If Hamilton can rediscover his qualifying form, particularly when up against his new Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, it could simplify his challenges on race weekends. This would be especially crucial at tracks where qualifying positions are pivotal, such as Monaco and Singapore, where starting at the front can provide a significant advantage.
Leclerc, while remarkable at extracting the maximum from his car over a single lap, has a tendency to push the limits too far, sometimes resulting in mistakes that lead to damage. If Hamilton can match or outperform Leclerc in qualifying, it could give him a critical edge in their head-to-head battles throughout the season.
