Mattia Binotto confirms Inaki Rueda as strategy chief: “Entire team is great and I fully support them”

“But now the boss must change the people in charge of race strategies” – this was the appeal launched to Mattia Binotto by Giorgio Terruzzi in today’s edition of the Italian daily newspaper Il Corriere della Sera regarding an interaction between the remote garage in Maranello and the Ferrari pit wall that in 13 races did not work properly on at least three occasions, namely Monaco, Silverstone and yesterday in Hungary, where the choice to use the hard compound for Charles Leclerc instead of extending the second consecutive stint with medium tires was deleterious for the Monegasque’s race at the Hungaroring circuit:

“It is impossible to hope for the title with races like this” – admitted Charles Leclerc at the end of the Grand Prix ended in sixth position, an incredible outcome given the fact that on lap 39 he was in command of the race and in control after a great overtaking move on the Mercedes car of George Russell. As in Monaco, Ferrari let itself driven by the anxiety of having to respond by force to the Red Bull pit stop without insisting on the strategy set and ignoring the moves of the opponents, who thus benefited from yet another gift from Ferrari.

The question of whether the Ferrari pitwall needs some changes had already been addressed by Mattia Binotto during the press conference at the end of the Hungarian Grand Prix. Might Ferrari need to look at replacing strategy boss Inaki Rueda?

“Not only Inaki but the entire team is great and I’m fully supporting them,” Mattia Binotto insisted. “I think when our opponents make mistakes, it does not attract so much attention. So I support everyone in the team completely for doing a great job on balance. Absolutely nothing needs to be changed in the pit wall. Other teams make mistakes, they are the same team for ten years, they keep the same organization and then they won a World championship. I don’t understand why you have to change after every single mistake.” the words of the Ferrari team principal after the race in Hungary.

Obviously analyzes will have to be made in order to understand what went wrong in the first part of the 2022 Formula 1 season and how things can be improved for the second half of the championship: “My approach is not to change, but to add, always: to understand what is not working, to correct and when I say to add I mean to improve. This team has a strong basis, the guys are showing a good mentality, determination and ability. Obviously we still have to grow and we will.” – Mattia Binotto concluded.
