After the controversies of recent weeks, when doubts arose over Racing Bulls’ decision to attempt the fastest lap at the end of the race with Daniel Ricciardo, effectively taking the extra point away from Lando Norris to help Red Bull and Max Verstappen, starting in 2025 the point for the fastest lap will no longer be awarded. This topic was discussed during the drivers’ press conference on the eve of the United States Grand Prix. Several drivers shared their opinions, and here's what they had to say.

Point for the fastest lap, yes or no? The drivers’ opinions
The first driver to speak about the FIA World Council's decision to abolish the point for the fastest lap was Carlos Sainz. The Ferrari driver stated: “No more fastest lap from 2025, I always thought it wasn't necessary. Now, sometimes it's awarded randomly. One more point can make sense, maybe to whoever takes pole.” – the Spaniard pointed out during the press conference ahead of the United States Grand Prix in Austin.

Esteban Ocon feels the same way: “I never saw it as something positive.”

Kevin Magnussen, on the other hand, shared his view as a driver for a mid-field team like Haas: “From the perspective of a mid-field team, it's something you rarely see. If you're seventh or eighth, you're not thinking about the fastest lap.”

Lando Norris, despite being the victim of what happened in the Singapore Grand Prix, expressed a different view from his colleagues: “If I lost the championship by one point, I wouldn't attribute it to Daniel Ricciardo's fastest lap in Singapore. And I don't know if things will change because of this in 2025. I would never blame Daniel or their team. The reasons would be something else. I don't know why they're removing it, but I like it the way it is now.”
