Ferrari has finalized its 2025 lineup with Lewis Hamilton, leaving Carlos Sainz without a seat. The Spaniard will therefore join Williams for the upcoming Formula 1 season, and his former race engineer has raised hopes for the British team.

Carlos Sainz has raced for several teams in F1. Starting at Toro Rosso, he moved to Renault before McLaren overhauled its lineup in 2019 with Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz. It was at the British team that Carlos Sainz made a name for himself, prompting Ferrari to choose him to replace Sebastian Vettel.

At McLaren, Carlos Sainz worked with Tom Stallard, his race engineer during his two seasons at the team. Tom Stallard described Carlos Sainz as "a brilliant driver to work with."

"He loves engineering and the technical side of Formula 1. It makes sense because his father, Carlos Senior, is the same way in rallying." This trait, Stallard believes, will benefit Williams. "They're getting someone who will truly engage with their technical department, attend engineering meetings, and help push them in the right direction."

Stallard admitted he wasn't as familiar with Carlos Sainz's career before McLaren. Reflecting on their work together at Woking, however, he acknowledged Carlos Sainz’s contributions. "When he joined McLaren, his value in Formula 1 wasn't that high. I think he helped McLaren improve significantly when we really needed it. I also believe we helped re-establish him as one of the best drivers in Formula 1."

Finally, Carlos Sainz’s former engineer commented on the impact the Spaniard had at Ferrari. "I think he clearly helped Ferrari. Honestly, I'd say they're a very realistic challenge in the Constructors’ Championship right now, and not a small part of the credit should go to him."
