The 1989 Portuguese Grand Prix, held at the Autódromo do Estoril on September 24, marked the thirteenth round of the 1989 Formula One World Championship. The 71-lap race was dominated by Austria’s Gerhard Berger, who secured victory driving for Ferrari. Alain Prost, piloting a McLaren-Honda, finished in second place, while Stefan Johansson achieved a remarkable third for the Onyx-Ford team.
The race, however, was marred by drama involving Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell. Senna, competing with Prost for the championship, was forced to retire after a collision with Nigel Mansell's Ferrari. Nigel Mansell had been black-flagged earlier in the race for illegally reversing in the pit lane, but the incident ended both drivers’ races and added another chapter to their intense rivalry.
