New active aerodynamics systems

As already mentioned, Formula 1 cars from 2026 will be significantly lighter and equipped with active aerodynamics, which should particularly enhance overtaking. Specifically, the weight of the cars will be reduced by 30 kg, and a special configuration of the front and rear wings, called X Mode, will be introduced.

This system will serve to cancel all attack angles while driving on a straight, while Z Mode will ensure perfect aerodynamics in corners and braking. The effect produced by these aerodynamic modifications should be similar to that of installing a universal sunroof on a sports car.

Hybrid propulsion and internal combustion engine

The power derived from the ICE will decrease from the current 560 kW to 400 kW, and the internal combustion engine will be powered by 100% sustainable fuels. As for battery power, it will see a significant increase, reaching 350 kW (compared to the current models’ 120 kW). In other words, electric power will increase by 300%.

This marks a substantial leap forward in the power unit regulations, first published in 2022. Some, like Adrian Newey, are even concerned about this major change, as there is a risk of granting uncontested dominance to a single manufacturer for several years.

Goodbye to DRS

Given the significant changes in Formula 1 vehicle aerodynamics, the DRS system has effectively been surpassed. The Drag Reduction System, introduced in 2011, allows drivers to increase vehicle speed during straight-line overtaking through a special configuration of the movable rear wing.

Starting in 2026, it will be replaced by Manual Override. This system will specifically allow drivers to exploit the electric motor’s power for a longer period on straights. Manual Override will be available when a driver is within a certain distance of the car ahead before the lap ends.

A true reset in F1

The new regulations proposed by the FIA will bring a major revolution to Formula 1 races starting in 2026. Some believe these changes could have a negative impact on the spectacle and competitiveness of the races.

However, it is also true that manufacturers and automotive companies do not only aim to provide entertainment but, above all, have the noble goal of developing and testing future technologies.
