Why Mexico GP can become turning point for Ferrari, more than just overtaking Red Bull at stake

Seeing Sergio Perez eliminated in Q1 may not be such a big surprise anymore, but Oscar Piastri certainly is. While the latest updates brought by McLaren and Red Bull have kept the fight for the drivers’ title alive—and even intensified it, with Verstappen and Norris in very close positions both in Texas and here in Mexico, fighting for pole position in both events—there has been a decline in performance on the other side of the garage.

While Sergio Perez’s performances have been inconsistent throughout the year, we can say that Oscar Piastri’s recent struggles began in Texas. Even in the Sprint qualifying, things did not go well for the Australian, who was eliminated in SQ1 but fortunately bounced back in the main qualifying and the race. It seems Oscar has lost some confidence with the car after the latest updates and needs a bit of time to find the right direction.

Ferrari, No Room for Error
McLaren and Red Bull stumbled during the Mexican qualifying session. With Oscar Piastri and Sergio Perez starting from 17th and 18th positions, Ferrari has a great opportunity in the constructors’ standings. There is more at stake than just overtaking the Milton Keynes team; there’s the chance to significantly reduce the gap to McLaren, who are currently in first place (the standings show the papaya team leading with 544 points, Red Bull second with 504, and Ferrari third with 496).

The fact that Max Verstappen is returning to the competitive levels expected of him means that Red Bull is improving, while McLaren may need a bit of time to fully understand the potential of their new package and be stronger in the last races of the championship.

Therefore, today’s event could represent a significant turning point for Ferrari. No mistakes will be tolerated today; beyond winning, it will be important to score points and get both cars to the finish line. This refers not only to the performance of the drivers, mechanics, and the team on the pit wall. The Hermanos Rodriguez circuit, situated over 2,200 meters above sea level, always puts the components of the cars to the test. Everything must be meticulously planned. Performing well today could represent a crucial turning point for the Italian team in terms of the championship and provide an even greater boost compared to the double victory achieved last weekend in Austin.
