Rider: Ryder DiFrancesco

Growing up as one of the upcoming stars in motocross was Ryder DiFrancesco. From an early age, he had a knack for winning races. As he began racing amateur events at a very young age, he has had many accomplishments over the years including winning at Loretta Lynn’s in the 50cc 4-6 age group which is where his career began. Moving up through the ranks of the amateur program his dominance was seen through minis to big bikes. When the amateur racing was all said and done he had won Loretta Lynn’s eight times as well as many other amateur races across the country. When he went Pro he signed with Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki, a team he had ridden for prior with their amateur program, similar to Adam Cianciarulo. Ryder is only in his second full year of professional racing and has been consistently around the top ten. Now riding for Troy Lee Designs GasGas Factory Racing he is beginning to build on the new platform and as he grows with the sport we suspect to see some wins out of Ryder in the future.

HAIDEN DEEGAN EXTENDS HIS LEAD

Haiden Deegan had 1-2 moto finishes to grab him the overall over Tom Vialle and Jo Shimoda.

Haiden Deegan once again took another overall win at Southwick. This brings him to four wins in five races and shows his true dominance. Though he has proven that he is the fastest week in and week out he has made some mistakes that have kept him from 1-1 scores maximizing the points available. This was something we saw previously with Jett Lawrence in the 450 class where he openly spoke about bringing back some of the intensity to find more consistent results. As Haiden Deegan has just begun winning and becoming a dominant rider, as he matures he will become more and more consistent.

HUNTER LAWRENCE HOLDS POINTS LEAD BY THREE


Hunter Lawrence went 2-3 result at Southwick.

We’ve said this before but Hunter Lawrence remains the most consistent rider this season so far and with his 2-3 result at Southwick, he has continued this streak. However, Hunter has not won yet and this has had him losing points each moto to his brother Jett Lawrence who is now tied for second with Chase Sexton, just three points down from Hunter. Though with Sexton and Jett Lawrence pushing each other for moto wins, a mistake somewhere is bound to happen which would be in favor of the more consistent rider like Hunter Lawrence.

ASK THE MXPERTS: WOULD YOU RACE A DAMPF-KRAFT-WAGON?

Dear MXA, I raced for years, but now that I am a retired businessman with a wife, three kids and five grandchildren, I have begun collecting classic motorcycles to keep in touch with the sport. But, it turns out that my knowledge of the past is not very extensive. I google every “Classic Iron” on the web to try to fill up the holes in my data base. I thought that you could tell me what the acronyms AJS, DKW, ATK, BSA, CZ, OSSA, ESO, CCM, DOT and LITO stand for.

AJS is an acronym for Albert John Stevens, one of four sons who started producing AJS motorcycles in 1910. Albert John Stevens lent his initials to the company, but father Joe and brothers Harry, George and Joe, Jr. were all involved.

ATK is an acronym for Anti-Tension Kettenantrieb (anti-tension chain drive), which comes from the Horst Leitner-designed chain line system that came on all ATK bikes.

BSA is short for Birmingham Small Arms. In 1861, a group of British gunsmiths joined to form Birmingham Small Arms (BSA). The gun connection is a common thread in early motorcycle production, with Husqvarna and CZ also part of the arms race. Those with sharp eyes will notice that BSA’s logo is in fact a stack of rifles.

CZ’s name came from gun manufacturer Ceska Zbrojovka, which took the acronym CZ for both its guns and motorcycles. This is a CZ Falta Replica — note the air shocks.

OSSA is the name of a Spanish movie projector company, Orpheo Sincronic Sociedad Anonima, which made movie projectors for its home market in Spain before making motorcycles in 1948. The company’s four-leaf clover emblem wasn’t actually a four-leaf clover; it is the escapement mechanism of a film projector.ESO isn’t an acronym; it’s the Czech word for “ace.”

CCM stand for Clews Competition Machines and was named after Alan Clews who bought out the left-over spares when the BSA Competition Department closed and used those parts to make his initial Clews Stroka four-stroke.

DOT was founded by Harry Reed in Manchester, England, and the acronym stands for Devoid of Trouble.LITO founder Kaj Bornebusch owned a very large printing business named Litoverken, which printed lithographs, and when Monark decided to disband the factory team after winning the 1959 500 World Championship, Kaj stepped in to build the motorcycles and changed the name to Lito. Lito is not an acronym, just a shortened version of lithograph.

The KTM, GASGAS, and Husqvarna crew were hard at work the entire week of the Mammoth Motocross event. They supported riders with any problems they may have  faced and kept riders on the track throughout Vet Weekend, Mini Week, and Big Bike Weekend. They didn’t just support the top-level riders but everyone who was riding one of their brands, without these guys a lot of riders would have been heading home early. From left to right we have Joshua Smith, Chris Sebas, Jose Cordova, Christian Cicero and Justin Muscutt.
