The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has released its list of Top Safety Pick+ and Top Safety Pick award winners. So far this year, 48 models have received one of the two awards. It's a shorter list than last year, and that's a result of updated testing and award requirements. The organization now relies on its updated moderate overlap test that rates second-row occupant safety, and a Good overall rating is required for the best award. An Acceptable rating will only get the base award. Some vehicles still need to be run through the new test, but many vehicles also performed poorly in the rear occupant portion, bringing down their frontal test scores. The truck segments were hit particularly hard, with only two models taking awards: the Toyota Tundra and the Rivian R1T.
