The Benchmark German Luxury Sedan Was Almost A Hatchback

Hatchbacks have always struggled to be popular, and up until recent decades, it was sedans like the 3 Series that dominated the automotive marketplace in major markets like the U.S. But that hasn't always stopped designers and automaker executives from the appeal of increased practicality with a hatchback, including easier loading of more cargo than a sedan might offer, and BMW almost went this alternative route decades before the 1 Series ever appeared, as shown in a recent Instagram post (embedded at the bottom of this post) by the Bavarian automaker.
