COLE DAVIES INTERVIEW: “MY BIG GOAL NOW IS TO WIN A RACE”

Like many, I felt Waitoki, New Zealand-born Cole Davies would do well in his rookie pro season, but, honestly, I didn’t expect him to be this good. He appeared to have an easy time taking the first two moto wins at Glendale’s triple crown. It was only an early crash in the final moto that kept him from dominating. Eventually, Davies would end up third overall. Now that Davies had a small break in the 250 West Coast series, we spoke with Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha’s seventeen-year-old, who is fourth in championship points.

Cole Davies has gotten better in each race he’s competed in and a win is looking more clear as each weekend passes.

COLE, YOUR ROOKIE SUPERCROSS SERIES HAS IMPRESSED MANY. HAVE YOU IMPRESSED YOURSELF? Honestly, yes, a little bit.  Coming into the season, I knew I was going to do good, but I just had to prove to myself that I could do good. But yes, I have been riding good. I have been happy with my placings and, I have been enjoying it.

I KNOW YOU DID SOME SMX FUTURES LAST YEAR, BUT WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHANGE NOW THAT YOU ARE RACING FULL-TIME SUPERCROSS? It is all about everything, honestly; the flying, getting the tracks down quickly, the pace of the guys – all the riders are good.  They all have good racecraft. Just everything is a bit of a step up from what I have been doing, but I am loving it.

Cole grabbed two main event wins, in Glendale’s triple crown but he is seeking the overall.

I WOULD HAVE TO IMAGINE YOU ARE FLYING BACK TO THE FARM AFTER EVERY RACE. IT MUST GET TAXING. It takes it out of you.  They are long flights, across the states back and forth every week. It is taking it out of me but it is still good. I enjoy it at the farm (Star Racing’s Training Facility) and am happy to return there every Sunday.

YOU HAD NOT RACED A TRIPLE CROWN FORMAT UNTIL GLENDALE, HOW DID YOU VIEW IT? I have just changed my mindset a bit before going into it. I understand that you have three chances to go out and do good. So, you just must be a bit consistent too, and get good starts. Good starts were the main thing this weekend, so yeah, just focus on starts and ride well and I will be sweet. You could see what I did with two good starts.

Only being in his first year, Cole Davies has proved he is the real deal and ready for what’s thrown at him.

AFTER THIS RACE AT GLENDALE, YOU HAD A LITTLE BREAK; WHAT DID YOU END UP DOING? Just focus on Supercross. Just get ready for Arlington, when we come back.  Get a little bit of energy back into the system and just a little bit of a break and just get ready for Arlington.

I KNOW YOU HAVE PROBABLY BEEN DOING IT FOR A WHILE NOW WITH THE TEAM BUT WHAT IS IT LIKE RIDING WITH A GROUP OF RIDERS THAT YOU RIDE WITH DURING THE WEEK? The team this year is definitely really good.  It is a strong team this year. During the week, we have a good group of fast guys, so it is good when we turn up to the race and we have such good guys at the practice track to ride with.

Only seventeen years old the young rookie has a long career ahead of him.

MAYBE TO WRAP IT UP, I DON’T KNOW IF YOU ARE A PERSON THAT SETS GOALS AND ALL THAT KIND OF STUFF BUT DO YOU HAVE A GOAL FOR FINISHING OR WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE WHEN THE LAST WEST COAST SUPERCROSS ENDS, KIND OF POINTS-WISE? My last goal when the West Coast season ends, you know, big picture, I just want to win a race, one race. Of course, you could say that I won two races in Glendale, but I want to win an overall. At least one race and hopefully get more, but my big goal now is to win a race.
