• THE RADICAL KTM AX PROTOTYPE THAT NEVER MADE IT TO PRODUCTION: HALF MOTORCYCLE, HALF QUAD & HALF X-BOW (WAIT THAT’S TOO MANY HALVES

Unveiled 15 years ago and  aimed at the Side-by-Side market, the KTM AX also blended in electric power.
This prototype KTM AX is a radical off-road vehicle which draws on KTM’s success with both its off-road motorcycles and the minimalist X-Bow (pronounced cross-bow) race car. With hybrid propulsion made up of  four  electric motors, plus a 270 horsepower Audi S3 engine with a DSG gearbox in the back, the AX prototype AX offers fantastic traction and agility.

Of course, it never saw production or was taken all that seriously by KTM management. The concept was designed by Markus Klung and Lucas Fuchs. It’s take sit’s design cues from the KTM X-Bow.

The vehicle is designed to be perfect for adventure-loving people. It’s high ground clearance, reinforced tires and off-road capable suspension was made for off-road riding. Individual components are integrated into a lightweight space frame with a rollover cage to ensures safety. Even with a quick glance it’s not hard to guess that the inspiration behind the concept is the KTM-X Bow.

• CLASSIC MXA PHOTOS: LIFE BEFORE MOTOCROSS

Before Jody switched completely over to motorcycle racing, he was a surfboard designer. He has lots of funny stories about trying to explain the dynamics behind his unusual asymetrical surfboard designs. He saved his favorite one.Jody on a big day at Rincon. At the stage of his life he lived in a small apartment behind a Santa Barbara veterinary clinic— he paid the rent by cleaning the dog cages.

Jody nose riding on a small day. When asked if he ever wanted to ride big waves, he said, “I’m a four-feet and under contest surfer.”

Before he started designing surfboards, he was on the Dewey Weber team traveling from beach to beach as part of the Weber exhibition team. This was the only time he ever had a beard.
Jody saved a lot of surfboards from his surfing days, but his Weber Team board, with two stringers and a paisley print on the deck, still hangs in his living room.

This is a young Jody sitting on the floor at the Island Surfboad Shop. The surfboard shop that sold his Asymetrical Surfboards was across the street, but he preferred the less business-like atmosphere of the shop across the street.

Jody stopped and shot this photo on the day he decided to quit surfing and the beach life to become a full-time motorcycle racer in the late 1960s. Believe it or not, you could put a full-size motocross bike inside a VW bus.

• MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: 2024-’25 KAWASAKI KX450/KX250 LINKAGE SYSTEM

The Pro Circuit Linkage System for the 2024-2025 Kawasaki KX450 and 2025 KX250 enhances handling by improving suspension performance. Unlike the stock linkage, which begins stiff and softens deeper into the stroke, this system offers a plusher initial feel while progressively firming up, thus reducing the need for stiffer high-speed valving. Designed similarly to the 2019-2023 KX450 linkage, it optimizes spring rates for enhanced balance, improved traction, and a smoother ride.

The Pro Circuit KX450 linkage system is plusher at the beginning and stiffens up as the rear wheel goes deeper into the stroke. This adjustment lessens the need for stiffer high-speed valving, which can cause the rear to feel harsh and deflective. This linkage curve is similar in design to the previous generation of KX450 (’19-23).A 0.1 kg/mm shock spring rate increase is recommended. The retail price is $465.00 at www.procircuit.com

Between the $15,000 in purse money, plus gifts and awards from the event sponsors this race will be handing out $20,000 in awards. For more info go to www.glen helen.com.

In this MXA video, we put James Ellis on our 2025 Yamaha YZ65 for a few laps at Glen Helen to experience the blue bike for the first time. Unfortunately, the test got cut short when he had a crash mid-way through the day, but we decided to make a fun little video anyway and return with more coverage on the YZ65 again soon, after James and our other mini-testers get some more time on it. This is just a first impression video from a youngster comparing the YZ65 to his Husqvarna TC65, enjoy!
