• JASON ANDERSON PULLS OUT OF THE 2025 SUPERCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP: KAWASAKI DOESN’T NEED A FILL-IN RIDER, THEY NEED A FILL-IN TEAM
We wish Jason and the Anderson family well with this ongoing “health concern.”
After sitting out the Seattle Supercross for a family emergency, Jason Anderson has made the decision (with the support Kawasaki) to sit out the remainder of the Supercross season to address ongoing health concerns. Jason’s current plan is to focus on returning to competition for the 2025 AMA 450 Nationals Championship which starts on May 24, 2025.
For their part, the Kawasaki team, minus its riders, since Jorge Prado was injured earlier in the Supercross season, will continue to attend the remaining Supercross rounds to support the Pro Circuit Kawasaki team and their riders in the “Supercross Futures” class (strangely renamed “SMX Next.”)
• FIRST LOOK! 2026 DUCATI DESMO 450MX MOTOCROSS BIKE
It will make it to the USA in late Summer with an MSRP OF $11,450 with a Desmodromic valve train, Showa Suspension, aluminum perimeter frame, Brembo brakes and a dry weight of 231 pounds.
• WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT A DESMO ENGINE?
Desmodromic-equipped engines are very complicated looking, but their major goal is to eliminate the need to use valve springs.
Back in the 1950s, Fabio Taglioni, the world’s greatest motorcycle engineer, pioneered the Desmo valve train. It was one of the most groundbreaking inventions of the time. Prior to the 1950s, four-stroke engines could not rev above 10,000 rpm. Why not? The valve springs of that era were not strong enough to withstand high rpm and broke as engine rpm soared.
Most modern four-stroke motocross bikes rely on increased rpm to make horsepower, but the valve spring issue stymied the effort. Just as bad as valve-spring breakage, there was the second issue of valve float. “Valve float” referred to the valve springs not being able to keep up with the cam lobes, so the valves floated somewhere in the middle of their opening curve. Manufacturers of the 1950s tried every cure they could think of to keep the valves from breaking or floating, but no matter what they tried, they couldn’t get above 12,000 rpm. That’s when Fabio Taglioni introduced the Desmo valve train and broke the rpm barrier.
“Desmo” is short for “desmodromic,” and it refers to the way that a four-stroke valve inside of an engine are controlled. Every four-stroke motorcycle engine’s valves are opened by the camshaft lobe and closed by the spring pressure of the metal valve spring. It is the dominant system because it works, is inexpensive to build and is simple to work on. A Desmodromic valve train eliminates broken springs and valve float by eliminating the spring. The valves are opened via the cam lobe and closed by an additional cam lobe that operates an L-shaped lever that positively pulls the valve closed.
A Desmo engine doesn’t use valve springs to return the valve to the closed position, instead it employs a second rocker arm and a second cam lobe to pull the valve closed.
It is simple because one cam lobe opens the valve and a second cam lobe closes the valve. Desmodromic valves were the rage in the 1950s. In fact, the famous straight-eight, W196, Mercedes-Benz Formula 1 cars had desmo valve trains. Ducati’s first Desmo engine was the 1956 125cc Grand Prix road race bike.
Today, only Ducati still races with the Desmodromic system, largely because the valve-spring issues have been eliminated by pneumatic valves that work off air pressure to close the valves. Pneumatic valves make it possible to shorten the valve’s open time and increases lift, which enables the engine to rev as high as 20,000 rpm.Now that Ducati has announced that the 2026 Ducati 450MX will be released later this year with its highly developed Desmo system, the 450MX engine’s valves will offer short-duration, higher-lift cam profiles that will produce a torque band that is very wide. But, it won’t be the first desmodromic production motocross bike sold in the United States, because that honor belongs to the 1971 Ducati 450 R/T Desmo (above)—a one-year model that suffered from frame issues that kept its Desmodromic powerplant from living up to its potential.
• DEAN WILSON TO FILL IN FOR JETT LAWRENCE AT HONDA/HRC
Dean Wilson has been a top-level Supercross rider for many years and though hasn’t raced Supercross this year he’s been racing overseas.
Honda has announced that Dean Wilson will race the factory Honda CRF450RWE atrthe last five rounds of the 2025 AMA Supercross season. Dean’s debut on Team Honda will be on April 12 in Philadelphia. The Honda team has fielded a 250-only effort in AMA Supercross since Hunter Lawrence withdrew for shoulder surgery following the the Tampa round and Jett Lawrence had pulled out for knee surgery one week earlier. Hunter hopes to return to action in time for the AMA National Motocross series as does Jett.
Dean Wilson is a veteran of elite-level U.S. racing, having earned the 2011 AMA 250 National Motocross Championship. And most recently Dean won the 2023 Australian Supercross Championship while while racing for Yarrive Konsky’s Honda Racing Australia team.
Early this year, Wilson raced for the British St. Blazey Honda team in the UK Arenacross Tour, which he won. He had intended to race five rounds of the AMA Supercross series for the Konsky-owned, Martin Davalos-managed Quad Lock Honda team, but will instead race for the Lars Lindstrom-managed factory squad.
Dean Wilson said:“I’m just really excited and grateful for this opportunity, It certainly wasn’t on my 2025 bingo card! It came through unfortunate circumstances, with the Lawrence brothers getting injured. I was on the other side of the pond in the UK, and I shot Lars a text, saying I would be interested. I eventually got a call that it will happen for the last five. I’ve always wanted to ride this bike and be a part of this team, so I kind of feel like a little kid again, to be honest—just over the moon! I’m thankful that Yarrive and Martin were very understanding.”
Dean Wilson picked up the much sought after fill-in ride to replace the injured Lawrence brothers.
Wilson began Supercross testing with Honda HRC Progressive last week, three weeks ahead of his debut with the squad. In the meantime, Jo Shimoda and Chance Hymas continue to represent the team in the 250 East/West classes.
• MXA AD OF THE WEEK: THE BAD IMAGE THAT MOTOCROSS HAD TO LIVE DOWN
Believe it or not, but when motocross first started in 1968 the American public didn’t know the difference between Harley riding motorcycle gangs and motocross racers. Movies like “Hell’s Angel’ s’69” didn’t help.

• MEMORIES OF THE WAY WE WERE
Before the days of lightweight, digital, action cameras, the only way to get POV footage was with a camera bolted to your helmet and a lead counterweight on the other side. That’s A.J. Whiting getting a sore neck
• HUSQVARNA’S 2014 BLACK ARROW AND WHITE ARROW PROTOTYPES
The Husqvarna Vitpilen (White Arrow in Swedish) is inspired by the 1953 Silverpilen road bike. The frame and engine come straight a KTM Duke 390, but has redesigned cosmetics to make it retro cool —ala cafe racer style.
To Americans Husqvarna is synonomous with off-road racing, thanks to J.N. Roberts, Steve McQueen and Malcolm Smith, who popularize the Swedish dirt bikes by riding the fast on red-tanked dirt bikes in “On Any Sunday.”
But Husqvarna wanted to change that image at the 2014 Milan motorcycle show in Milan, when they unveiled two new street bike conceptsHusky hope would open up new markets for the company. Few Americans realize that Husqvarna was well-known for its single cylinder street nike in the late 1930s and 1940 1940s. The unveiled concepts were the VitpIlen (white Arrow in English) and the Svartpilen (Black Arrow in English).
The 401 Svartpilen (Black Arrow) is another 390 clone, but this time as a retro-looking scrambler. These are not production bikes, but rather design concepts. They did see production in 2018.
The engine was a 373cc single of KTM design. It puts out a reported 43 horsepower in street trim.
On the White Arrow the exhaust exits down through the swingarm and then back up on the right side of the bike.
Here is the shock and exhaust interface.
Note the front and rear fork guards, the cross-hatch swingarm, LED headlight ring and minimal instruments.
The Vitpilen is very streamlined with minimal bodywork as part of Husqvarna’s Husqvarna says a “less is more” design philosophy, Even the LED headlight does double-duty such as a handlebar mounts. The engines on both model is the liquid-cooled, 401cc, four-stroke single.
The White Arrow and Black Arrow didn’t go into dealerships in 2018, but were phased out starting in 2023 and superceded by the Svartpilen 801, a more conventional naked street bike powered by a 799cc parallel twin engine that was deemed to be more desirable for America’s freeways, super highways and fast traffic than the discontinued 401 versions. Plus, the modernistic look of the 2014 prototypes was dropped.
